Diamonds International, a leading jewellery retailer in the Caribbean, and Rotary Club of Gros Islet, a service organization dedicated to creating lasting change in the community, have joined forces to donate over 100 backpacks filled with school supplies to the Ministry of Education, Sustainable Development, Innovation, Science, Technology and Vocational Training.
Rotary observes basic education and literacy in the month of September. Consequently, the club has partnered with Diamonds International to bring this backpack initiative to fruition.
The backpacks were handed over to Honourable Shawn Edward, Minister for Education, at the Diamonds International’s Pointe Seraphine location on Friday, August 25, 2023. The backpacks will be distributed to principals in areas of greatest need and handed out to (selected) students during the first week of the new school year.
The partnership project is part of Diamonds International’s corporate social responsibility programme, and Rotary Club of Gros Islet’s thrust to support Basic Education and Literacy, an Avenue of Service of Rotary International. Both organizations share a common vision of supporting education and empowering youth in Saint Lucia.

The backpacks contain essential items such as notebooks, pencils, pens, erasers, rulers, crayons, scissors and glue sticks. Some filled backpacks were also donated by individual Rotarians who wanted to participate more directly.
The Minister for Education expressed his appreciation and commended both organizations for their benevolence and partnership. He also encouraged the students to make good use of the backpacks and the school supplies.

The partnership project between Diamonds International and Rotary Club of Gros Islet is expected to benefit over 108 students from various schools across the island. The project aims to provide the students with the necessary tools and resources to facilitate their learning process and improve their academic performance.
