Changing the scope of Women’s Basketball – Romia and Sherneil are Game Changers

With Covid-19 causing a global shutdown on all sporting activity, the Saint Lucia Basketball Federation is buoyed and celebrates with Ms. Romia Joseph and Ms. Sherneil Charlery as both women in sport have had their project pitches accepted into the Adelante program.

Adelante is a two-year Women in Basketball program designed to identify, develop and unleash the next generation of female leaders in the Americas. The plan is to include new participants each year with a two-year curriculum and culminating activity at the Women’s FIBA World Cup or AmeriCup depending on program entry.

Ms Charlery, the President of Supporting Girls in Sport has a keen interest in raising awareness and/or encouraging female participation in basketball both as players and leaders. Ms Joseph, a student basketballer, is eager to see the development of women’s basketball in Saint Lucia thrive. They both will participate in a six-week, two-hour virtual program which will include presentations by international keynote speakers, learning various skills and ideas for implementing their projects and an in-person meeting in Miami in the summer of 2021.

Adelante will also see the participants benefit from its on-going mentorship program, with plans to have a culminating experience during the week of 2022 FIBA World Cup for successful participants.

Their first videoconference session is scheduled for Monday, May 11th on Zoom with Keynote Speaker, Mrs. Jenny Shipley, the first female Prime Minister of New Zealand.

The SLBF executive body fully endorses this initiative by FIBA Americas and the projects brought forth by the ladies. The SLBF believes that with the knowledge derived by our two participants from the Adelante program and with the support of the private and public sector, female basketball will be more prevalent in Saint Lucia from the grassroots level, upwards.
