VICTORY Eagles and Uptown Rebels both booked final spots following semifinal action in the Saint Lucia Football Association (SLFA) Inc. Southern Zone Under 17 football competition which got underway on Tuesday 13th August at the Dames Playing Field in Vieux Fort.
In game 1, Uptown Rebels initially had their back against the wall following a goalless first half versus Victory Eagles.
On the resumption Victory Eagles surged into the lead with a goal by Donavan Perpie in the 48th minute of play. The lead would soon double with Darnzel Hunt finding the back of the net in the 52nd minute.
Soon it was Evariste’s turn to get on the score sheet making it 3 – 0 in the 80th minute.
With ten minutes left for play Victory Eagles probably thought that they had this one well sealed up but the Uptown Rebels in true fighting spirit never let up and were rewarded with a goal by Saviola Elva in the 88th minute as the score read 3 – 1.
As if this was insufficient, Jn. Baptiste further reduced the deficit in the third minute of added on time, but by then the dye was already cast as Victory Eagles romped home victorious 3 – 2.
While Victory Eagles need to be congratulated for advancing to the finals, the young Rebels must be complimented for a spiritual display. Down but indeed not out.
The second semifinal between Stable Boyz and Black Panther of Soufriere lived up to all the hype and excitement.
Mc Farlane booted Stable Boyz into the lead in the 43rd minute of play as the half ended 1 – 0.
Following the resumption, Julien equalized for Black Panther in the 51st minute.
Both teams fought gallantly for the go ahead goal which failed to materialize as the game ended 1 – 1.
It was down to the dreaded penalty kicks.
A ding dong battle involving six kicks each ensued, and Stable Boyz prevailed 5 – 4 to advance to the finals.
The Third Place Play Off and Finals are scheduled for Saturday 17th August at the Dames Playing Field (Vieux Fort).
