Mabouya Valley T20 Cricket: Wins for Togetherness Youth and Rovers on Opening Day

In front of a small but appreciative crowd, the 2019 Mabouya Valley Youth and Sports Council T20 Cricket Tournament in collaboration with Parliamentary Representative for Dennery North, Shawn Edward bowled off on Sunday 31st March at the La Ressource Playing Field with a doubleheader.

In game one, Togetherness Youth with Shawn Edward in its lineup defeated Monarch by 44 runs after the match was reduced to 17 overs due to a late start.

Batting first, Togetherness Youth scored 149 for the loss of 8 wickets in their allotted 17 overs with Burch Francis top scoring with 60 off 40 deliveries which included 9 fours and 2 massive sixes.  Other contributions with the bat came from Johnathan Joseph (17) and Vernon Emmanuel (11), while extras were the second highest score of the innings – 34.

Bowling for Monarch, Lennie Modeste picked up 2 for 21 and Brent Edward bagged 2 for 30.

Needing 150 for victory at 7.5 runs per over, Monarch was bowled out for 104 with 16-year-old Nean Deterville batting at No.3 top scoring with a well-played 30. Joseph Worell chipped in with 11.

Extras the second highest score of the innings, 24.

(L-R) Burch Francis scored the first 50 of the tournament (60 from 40 deliveries) and captain Shane Harris picked up 3 for 13 for Togetherness Youth; Under-16 player Neam Deterville top scored with 30 for Monarch batting at No.3.

Bowling for Togetherness Youth, Shane Harris took 3 for 13 and Garvin Jn Baptiste 2 for 19.

In game No. 2, the rivalry continued between Rovers United and Survivals. That encounter was also reduced to 17 overs for the same reason as game No.1.

After losing the toss and asking to take first knock, Rovers United powered their way to 231 runs for the loss of 3 wickets with captain Zackary Edmund scoring a whirlwind 95 off 45 deliveries which included 9 fours and 6 towering sixes. Edmund and his opening partner Al Prince put on 129 runs in 9.4 overs for the first wicket before the latter was adjudged LBW for 40. Wicketkeeper/batsman Junior Peter showed no mercy with a quick firing 58 off 22 balls and Tyler Sookwa batting at No. 4 scored a breezy 14.

Bowling for Survivals, Nad Joseph picked up 1 for 36; Denver Edgar took 1 for 42 and Polius Edwin 1 for 71.

In reply, Survivals reached 166 for the loss of 9 wickets; Thomas Peter top scoring with 27 not out, Nad Joseph and Nicholson Alexander each scoring 21, Randy St.Ange 11 and Gregson Antoine 10 (notably the only batsmen to reach double figures).

The main wicket takers for Rovers United were Zackary Edmund 3 for 27, Dishon Rampaul 3 for 34 and Al Prince 2 for 27.

Matches continue this weekend at the La Ressource Playing Field.

On Saturday 6th April, Mabouya Valley Under-19 versus Mabouya Valley Veterans from 10 a.m. and Young Generations plays Aux Lyon at 2 p.m.

On Sunday 7th, Survivals versus Togetherness Youth from 10 a.m. and RYO takes on Rovers United at 2 p.m.
