CYPAN To Host Annual Discourse, With Climate Change the Focus

PRESS RELEASE – Small island developing states are increasingly confronted by natural disasters, inflicted by the effects of climate change. The cost of such change has to be borne by all stakeholders, including Government, civil society and the business community.

With the realization of this, and in commemoration of last year’s observance of International Day of Peace and Business Month, the Commonwealth Youth Peace Ambassadors Network (CYPAN), will be hosting the 2nd annual CYPAN Discourse. The CYPAN Discourse is a public speaking competition, which engages students in fruitful discourse on a wide range of issues. This year, the Discourse will focus on the issue of Climate Change and Adaptation. The event will raise the awareness of the impact of climate change on small island developing states “Enterprises – People and Profit”, taking into consideration the perspective of peace;

  1. How such instability can contribute to the increase in violence and crime;
  2. The mental wellness of individuals impacted by such change

Interested participants were asked to submit pieces on this year’s theme “The Right to Peace; Through Sustainable Enterprises – People, Planet and Profit”, stating what it meant to them. The finalists for the discourse also benefited from training and mentorship sessions, to better prepare them for constructive engagement with their audience. Training areas focused on Effective Public Speaking, The Right to Peace- Consumers Vs Suppliers, the Psychological Effects of Natural Catastrophes, Reconciling, Adaptation and Mitigation for Sustainable Developments and Building Sustainable Enterprises within the business community.

The discourse will be held at the Finance Administrative Centre on Thursday February 17th 2019. Each participant will be allotted time to present on the topic ‘The Right to Peace; Through Sustainable Enterprises – People, Planet and Profit’.
