PRESS RELEASE – PRIME Minister, Allen Chastanet has announced that over the coming weeks and months, his government will be implementing more strategies to improve national road safety.
Writing on his official Facebook page, Chastanet said the measures include the marking of roads, increased traffic signage, barriers, traffic patrols and safer sidewalks.
“As citizens, we must also play our part by driving and riding with greater care, not only thinking of ourselves but also keeping the safety of our passengers, other drivers and pedestrians in mind, ” he observed.
“Roads have Stories-For Happy Endings, Let’s Improve Road Safety,” the PM’s Facebook post noted.
The World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims (WDR) was observed this year on Sunday past.
The day is commemorated on the third Sunday of November each year to remember the many millions killed and injured on the world’s roads, together with their families, friends and many others who are also affected.
“It is also a Day on which we thank the emergency services and reflect on the tremendous burden and cost of this daily continuing disaster to families, communities and countries, and on ways to halt it,” a note on the UN adopted observance said.
In Saint Lucia, police records indicate that 23 people have so far lost their lives as a result of road accidents this year.
They include an adult and two children who perished last month when a vehicle ran off the road at Bexon and collided with a stationary motor truck.
