Schools Sports Results – Melius Hits Masterly 184

MATCHES continued on Thursday in the female category of the Schools Under-20 Volleyball Championships at the Vigie Sports Complex with one game being played.

Micoud Secondary defeated Castries Comprehensive Secondary in straight sets 25-15, 25-13.

Three games were scheduled for yesterday in the male category at the Vigie Sports Complex and Micoud Court. At the VSC, Sir Arthur Lewis Community College took on Corinth Secondary while at the Micoud Court, AnseGer Secondary played Soufriere Comprehensive and Micoud took on Clendon Mason Memorial.

Meanwhile, three matches were played in the Massy United Insurance Under-19 Schools Cricket Tournament which continued on Thursday. At the Monchy Playing Field, Leon Hess Comprehensive defeated Jon Odlum Secondary by 109 runs. Batting first, Leon Hess Comprehensive made 176 all out in 28.4 overs with Denzel Albert making 35, Mateo Boulogne 33, Brandt Jean 28 and Jaden Elibox 14. Bowling for Jon Odlum Secondary, Randal Joseph bagged 5 for 28 in 6.4 overs and Brandon Modeste 3 for 26 in 9 overs.

In reply, Jon Odlum Secondary was dismissed for 67 in 13.2 overs with Modeste scoring scoring 18. For Leon Hess, the chief destroyer was National Under-15 left arm orthodox spinner Jaden Elibox with impressive figures of 6 for 42 in 6.2 overs. Boulogne lent good support with 3 for 15 in 6 overs.

At the Gros Islet Playing Field, Sir Ira Simmons won over Corinth Secondary convincingly by 9 wickets. Batting first, Corinth Secondary scored 86 in 15.3 overs with Mark Mondesir scoring 14. Doing the damage for Sir Ira Simmons were Jerius Moises with 3 for 14 in 3 overs, Kerick Victor 3 for 21 in 4 overs, and Mavay Smith 2 for 20.

In response, Sir Ira Simmons, led by unbeaten knocks of 42 by David Phillip and 25 from Anthony Cadette, finished on 88 for 1 in 13.5 overs.

At the Piaye Playing Field, Piaye Secondary won over Soufriere Comprehensive in an exciting nail-biter by 1 wicket. In a 40-over a side match, Soufriere made 208 all out in 33 overs with Nick Jn. Baptiste top scoring with a well-played 91. Bowling for Piaye Secondary, Tristan Norbal took 3 for 19 in 4 overs and AllianDalson 2 for 15 in 6 overs.

Set 209 for victory, Soufriere Comprehensive held the upper hand with Piaye peculiarly placed at 141 for 9 and 68 runs needed with only one wicket in hand. But a remarkable unbroken 10th wicket stand between former National Under-15 player Shelton St. Rose (82) and national female cricketer Allyah Alfred (12) ensured sweet victory for Piaye Secondary.

Bowling for Soufriere Comprehensive, Trevor Edward bagged 3 for 23 in 8 overs, KervelProspere 3 for 31 in 8 overs and Melody Jules 2 for 30 in 8 overs.

One match was on the card for yesterday between Sir Arthur Lewis Community College and Babonneau Secondary at the Gros Islet Playing Field.

Also, the second semifinal game in the inter-schools female football competition took place on Thursday at the Vigie Playing Field. At the end of regulation time, Soufriere Comprehensive Secondary trumped Leon Hess Comprehensive Secondary 2-0 with goals from Sacha Alcide in the 10th minute and Nicofia Joseph in the 40th minute.

On Tuesday, national cricketer Kimani Melius continued where he left off last year to register his first century for Babonneau Secondary in the 2017 Massy Insurance Under-19 Schools Cricket Tournament.

After taking first knock at the Monchy playing field and led by a superb 184 runs from West Indies Under-16 batsman Melius, Babonneau amassed 311 all out in 33.4 overs and went on to win by a mammoth 171 runs.

Melius, who celebrated his 16th birthday last month, batted with great command, hitting nine 4s and twenty-three 6s in his masterful innings before being run out. There were other useful contributions from Rene Montoute with 39 and Caleb Thomas 16.

Bowling for SDA Academy, national youth cricketer Chaz Cepal picked up 4 for 38 while, Rumano Simmons 2 for 20.

In reply, good steady bowling from Babonneau Secondary restricted SDA Academy to 140 all out in 20.2 overs. Rumario Simmons top scored with 39, Chaz Cepal made 20 and Quammi Remy 17.

For Babonneau Secondary, the leading bowlers were Leon Benjamin with 3 for 9, Stavone Gabriel 3 for 25 and KendyAmeau 2 for 22.

Also on Tuesday, in schools volleyball, two matches were played at the Vigie Sports Complex and Soufriere respectively.

At the VSC, Micoud Secondary defeated Entrepot Secondary in straight sets 25-23, 25–18 while at Soufriere St. Joseph’s Convent also won by straight sets over Soufriere Comprehensive 25-16, 25 – 17.

District Six held its annual Independence Road race on Tuesday with the following results:

Girls Category – 1st place — Eto’aGray (Vieux Fort Primary), 2nd place — Tarna Pierre (Vieux Fort Primary), 3rd — Lizzie Dovius (Blanchard Combined).

Boys Category – 1st place — Kaleb Fegurson (Vieux Fort Primary), 2nd place Ken Julian (Vieux Fort Primary), 3rd place – (Chester Bryan (Augier Combined).

Overall points standing were Vieux Fort Primary (126), Plain View Combined (38) and Augier Combined 31.
