WINDWARD and Leeward Brewery Limited (WLBL) has been investing in the development of Saint Lucia’s youth for over 40 years through the sponsorship of sporting events, supporting academic achievements and more recently, through a partnership with the Sir Arthur Lewis Community College (SALCC).

The partnership which commenced in 2014, was formed to identify and assist in the development of future talent and also to explore educational enhancement opportunities for interns in areas such as engineering, science, business, sales, marketing and other fields.

This year, through the partnership, WLBL will welcome 27 interns to the Brewery starting this month. The interns will be assigned to the various departments including Packaging, Finance, Engineering, Logistics, Quality, Human Resources, Commercial Department and Northern Beverages Limited.

“The goal of the WLBL and SALCC Internship Programme is to enable students to gain an understanding and appreciation of the requirements of the world of work from a world class employer. This year, we developed job descriptions which were advertised at the school and had the students apply for the positions that interested them. Over 50 students applied and were shortlisted, then contacted to come in for an interview” stated Erik Hammer, Human Resources Manager.

Since the commencement of the programme, WLBL has accommodated over 75 interns who are with the company for a minimum of four weeks and maximum 12 weeks depending on the needs of the various departments. As a result of the programme, the company has hired one person full-time and a few temporary employees.
