IT is interesting that certain segments of the society seem so very eager to have the nation shut up or take a vow of silence on the performance of the recently voted out Dr. Kenny D. Anthony Labour Administration.
This is a rather premature and highly illogical expectation that is being espoused by some SLP sympathizers. The electorate is still appraising the performance of the former leader and his cabinet which left behind many unexplained and unresolved concerns that this incoming Allen Chastanet UWP administration has not only inherited, but now has a mandate to address and resolve in the best interest of the country.
The majority of Saint Lucians feel left in the dark about the many goings–on that relate to the record of the past government, some activities extending well beyond local shores. The public is now anticipating that the layers of secrecy will be peeled back by Allen Chastanet and his Cabinet, so that the public can finally judge just what Dr. Anthony was really up to during his reign as leader of this country. This is not to say that the revelations shall necessarily turn out to be negative or controversial; but there are certainly areas that were deliberately avoided or kept opaque by the past Labour administration including the unclear reasons for the early retirement of former Commissioner of Police Vernon Francois “in the interest of the public”. The public loved the Commissioner so the reason for his premature retirement cannot have much to do with the public’s interest.
Voters were feeling disadvantaged over the past four and a half years and wounds are still in the early stages of healing. Why should the people be told to shut up? Why should the media or Talk Show hosts train their attention solely on the new administration, even as the co–relation between the past and present is clear?
The nation is still being confronted by consequences of Labour’s failed policies and other controversial links to unsavory dealings in matters such as Grynberg, Frenwell, Jufali, Lambirds, Impacs, and the justice system to name a few.
The new government is still settling down, but the nation knows they will have to deal with the unfortunate consequences of the actions and policy decisions of the past government. Practically every aspect of governance of the SLP administration of 2011 to 2016 is still there confronting the country. So why the hasty desire to mute all mention of the main protagonists? Aren’t they the ones to be held responsible, be it good or bad, for the position of the country today?
As a matter of fact, currently the electorate is awaiting profound revelations and disclosures from this new administration on the economic status of the country, which by the way is perceived to have been under impeccable management. It is the people’s right to judge the record of their governments.
The electorate is and will be talking about Dr. Kenny Anthony’s stewardship for a long time to come, his strengths and weaknesses as a leader and his curiously low profile now. Even though he is stepping down as Leader of the Opposition or Party Leader he remains a major talking point for citizens. By the way, if memory serves us well; the Labour administration did not for once allow the former opposition to ever forget about the issues that they considered to be failures of the UWP. Labour’s campaign for Elections 2016 was undeniable proof of that.
