Day, Lucien For Studies Conference

DR. MARCUS Day and award-winning poet Vladimir Lucien will be making presentations open to the public during the upcoming 6th St. Lucia Studies Conference. The Conference is hosted by the Hon. Harold Simmons Folk Academy of the Folk Research Centre. The Conference venue is the Folk Research Centre at Mount Pleasant, Castries.

The Conference opens officially on Wednesday June 22nd with the key note Harold Simmons Memorial lecture to be delivered by Professor Emerita Hazel Simmons at 7 pm. The Simmons Memorial lecture is re-established with the Julian R. Hunte Group of Companies which had started the lecture in 1979.

The theme of the 2016 Conference is “Discovering St. Lucian life and culture through ongoing research.” The Studies Conference, begun in 2004, is held every two years.

The themes of the presentations range from cricket to the literary work of the Walcott brothers to the St. Lucian trade union movement to education, among other topics.

On the evening of Thursday 23rd at 7 pm at the Folk Research Centre, Dr. Marcus Day will speak on “Youth gangs and violence – their contribution to crime in St. Lucia,” while Vladimir Lucien, who won the prestigious Bocas Literature Prize in 2015 will speak on obeah and tjenbwa. He has been researching the subject and his talk is titled,” A science from God: legitimacy, morality and the distribution of spirit power.” Dr. Day has been researching the area of youth, drugs, HIV issues, for many years. The public is invited to attend these two very relevant and timely presentations.

Pre-Conference registration is available to those interested in participating in the Studies Conference which runs from the 22nd to the 24th. Conference registrations begin at 8.30 on conference days.
