CELESTIAL Self Development Centre’s Library has donated a set of children’s books to the Marchand Combined School as part of its, “Fall in Love with Reading” challenge.

Managing Director Thecla Deterville made the presentation on behalf of Celestial Self Development Centre at the school to the Grade one class on, Monday.

As a long-time literacy advocate, Mrs. Deterville shared with students how books, reading and writing have influenced her and encouraged students to continue their love for reading.

Following the donation, Princess Regis, a member of the Celestial Self Development Staff and former student of the school read to the students from the children’s book titled, “How full is Your Bucket” by authors Tom Rath and Mary Reckmeyer. The session was highly interactive as the students answered questions which were posed to them, clearly demonstrating their understanding of what was read.

The literacy encouragement programme, “Fall in love with Reading” is an initiative, designed to promote independent reading among all children as well as adults. Every year since 2014 as part of the Centre’s library reading challenge particularly in the Month of May to coincide with the observance of reading month in our schools, CSDC has donated a selection of books to schools in the community in which it operates. The primary objective being to increase access to reading materials for the students.

Since the inception of this initiative Celestial Self Development Centre has rolled out the programme to eleven schools in the city of Castries and environs. Marchand Combined is the second infant school to benefit from the programme, the first being the Anglican Infant school in 2015.

The initial beneficiaries of this initiative which began in 2014 were nine pre-schools located in the Sans Souci area and environs.
