Helps Gros Islet Primary School Agri Project.
REGIONAL insurance company Sagicor Life Inc is planting seeds of eating healthy, locally-grown produce at the Gros Islet Primary School garden, after assisting the school with the purchase of an irrigation system.
The garden was lauded as a step in the right direction by Leathon Khan, General Manager and Principal Representative of Sagicor Life Inc St. Lucia. “We are proud to assist with this programme. It is vital that our young people learn about locally-grown produce and their nutritional value.”
He continued: “Through this programme we are cultivating future generations who will not need to rely as heavily on imported foods and who will be less susceptible to chronic non-communicable diseases. These objectives are in keeping with Sagicor’s commitment to support initiatives and developments, which will enhance the long-term quality of life in the communities in which we operate.”
Sunita Daniel, Chair of the National School Feeding Committee expressed gratitude to the company for joining the fight against hunger and explained that the irrigation system was a critical element missing at the school , especially with St Lucia facing drought conditions.
Ms. Daniel added: “The irrigation system donated by Sagicor has ensured that vegetables could be grown successfully for use in the programme. We look forward to our continued collaboration to ensure that no child goes hungry.”
This pilot project, spearheaded by the Ministry of Education, Human Resource Development and Labour, in conjunction with the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Production, Fisheries, Cooperatives and Rural Development, will see fresh produce from school gardens and local farmers being incorporated into school menus.
