IN the first part I deliberately superimposed Rick Wayne’s talents and achievements upon the spirit of the plaintive melody of ‘A city’s death by Fire’ which first grabbed me many moons ago. I have lived with the rhythm of ‘a city’s death’ perhaps as a tribute to my father who repeatedly encouraged me to read. I have also tried to praise what I find honourable in Rick. Try as I may, I find it difficult to compare him with MP’s who are styled ‘honourable,’ by custom. Frankly, one does not need Rick’s sales pitch of ‘don’t give up, give them up’ for the average voter to reject a government that has made life harder for so many.
Derek’s first poems had captured my spirit even as I struggled silently and alone to discover the regular rhythms that my poor brains strained to interpret. Thankfully, I had allowed my mind a holiday from Derek’s trove of beauty – his spiritual offerings. At the same time I prayed for the spirit within to inspire me to a better appreciation of the regular rhythm, melody and harmony that Derek applies with equal facility in the lyrics of verse and prose.
To confirm the man’s genius, I began to read his work backwards, beginning with the last sentence of each poem. I first did this with ‘The Arkansas Testament’ and recently with ‘White Egrets’. And behold, the work kept the same rhythm and melody, even though the words ran backwards. Who but the truly gifted can feel the texture of words as a master musician feels the vibrations of his instrument or a watchmaker, the fine tuning of an exquisite master piece? To speak in precise meter forward and backwards is not unlike thinking in reverse gear, and writing in forward. It is an art which can only be explained if words are akin to fine fabric in the hands of a gifted clothing designer. Such exquisite talent touches the spiritually beautiful, allowing the select to savour it.
During the popular ‘Black Power’ movement in the Caribbean in the late nineteen sixties certain Caribbean poets proudly expressed a new discovery of ‘mother Africa.’ Derek Walcott remained aloof refusing to join the carnival while insisting that the Caribbean is a different people. It is a product of the strongest Africans who survived the Middle Passage together with the Europeans who survived malaria and harsh conditions, co-mingled with the blood of the native Caribs and later, indentured East Indians. Derek insisted that he was ‘divided in the blood’ sometimes, even derogatively referring to himself as a ‘red nigger.’
By refusing to be labelled a ‘black writer’ Derek Walcott later received the respect and accolade of those more deeply familiar with the texture and nuance of the English language, distinguishing himself as a poet and writer of extreme luminosity, instead of merely ‘a brilliant black writer.’
After some considerable soul searching, I posit the view that Rick Wayne has come closest to the achievements of the island’s two Nobel Laureates. First in the pursuit of perfection of his physique which the gods had desired in their design; and later, in his writings and authorship of several books and articles. His earlier excellent physique was meant to serve the gods – not feeble man. Had this small insular space been inhabited by superior merit it may have created and designed special national awards for persons such as Rick Wayne. His defined physicality and feats in body building and his demonstrable writing skills border on the specially gifted.
Rick’s often careful and accurate writing would certainly be better appreciated in a place where less time was spent in foolish drunkenness and cheap talk than in serious reading, honest dialogue and introspection. Men such as Rick are treasures which narrow partisan politics ought not to separate us from. The fact that he can change his mind about his political allegiances and refuse to be bogged down in empty sentimentality and rhetoric is a positive characteristic. His detractors who gorge themselves at the public trough are too bent on malice to see.
No structured education of the University graduate, who persists in trying to bring down an icon of our times, will suffice to ridicule achievement and merit. Such cheap shots cannot (and will not) stand the scrutiny of the more discerning. The better spirits will always uphold Rick as one who thrives best in the thin stratosphere of excellence, even when he sometimes speaks too much.
The scourge of this island is that those who can read will not. If we have learned anything from the phrase ‘unstructured education’ it is that it cannot be truthfully applied to one who constantly reads and writes. The greatest writers, thinkers, inventors and artists are touched with a spiritual energy one can hardly tame, or dictate to. Such persons are purposefully driven to excellence by superior light.
Such energy is something apart, and not acquired from mere tutoring or coaching. Exceptional talent which adorns the inward man is a gift. No one knows for certain how such gifts are distributed, its randomness defies logic. Indeed, gifts which rise to a thing of true beauty and are successful, challenge the imagination for comprehension.
The crowning jewel of such gifts is truth. It is that jewel which worthy men seek. It adorns the poetry of Walcott and the better researched writings of a Rick Wayne. In his farewell address to the Thessalonians, St. Paul advised them to ‘put all things to the test and to keep what is good (truthful), and avoid all evils. He also advised them to be joyful always, and pray at all times. Joyful here means not false laughter but, a joy which comes from a heart of love, and from a mind that is not cluttered with hate and foolish misgivings, and is at peace with itself. Real joy comes from truth and truth brings peace and tranquility.
A peaceful, joyful mind would not stoop to lower the reputation and achievements of others. No man should be maligned perchance to enhance the reputation of another. It cannot be proper for those who know better to allow mediocrity to peddle its broken political wears in public, and say nothing. Silence in such cases is not an option. Whether we agree with his strident methods of delivery or not we must applaud Rick for persistently applying his journalistic skills to ask hard questions of elected officials and others – those who are paid from the public purse.
Democracy dictates that it is better to try and get the government to be less secretive, and more open, transparent and truthful. Silence is not an option. Better to have spoken out or, tried and failed. One soon discovers that failure is the true test of greatness. It is a paradox long recognized. And if by careful observation a man is said to have succeeded, it’s also likely that such a man knows the limits of his own weakness, and is likely humbled by it, having previously tried and failed. A man who has experienced failure does not arrogantly flaunt his achievements.
Finally, it’s a great big world out there and Rick Wayne has successfully navigated it. Give the man credit even though like me, you may not always agree with his politics. Bestowing upon a man what is rightfully his and acclaiming him before the entire world we do ourselves a great honour in the process. For how else can salute what is best in our citizens if we have not risen to the spiritual stature which commands us to put aside pettiness of all types and rise to the beautiful spirit within us? We can no longer be waxing tears as some sad candle burning, at a time when commercial electricity should be the right of every citizen and education a national pursuit. We ought not to condemn when praise worthily beckons.
