THE curtains came down on the 2015 – 2016 Veterans Football League this past weekend in Vieux Fort and Soufriere with championship wins for Valley Legends over Behind the College All Stars in the Plate Draw and Soufriere Legends over Congorians in the Main Draw.

On Sunday evening at the Soufriere Mini Stadium in front of an appreciative crowd, home team Soufriere had to pull all stops to defeat a stubborn Congorians team with a goal from No.10 Jerome Serville in the 67th minute after the score line was locked 0 – 0 at the halftime whistle.

For the third place play off for the silverware in the Plate Championship, Dennery All Blacks had the better of Prophets and Kings 2 – 1. The first half ended nil all.

On the resumption both teams picked up the tempo but it would be Dennery All Blacks that nosed ahead in the 74th minute with a well taken strike from No. 7 Pius Prospere. Dennery went on to stretch their lead when No. 16 Timothy Emmanuel scored in the 79th minute. With a minute on the clock Prophets and Kings gained a consolation goal when No. 2 Simeon Phillip hit one past the DAB custodian.

On Saturday evening for the third place silverware in the main championship Central Vieux Fort trounced Anse la Raye 6 – 0 in a one sided affair.

For Central Vieux Fort WillbarMoffat scored two goals and DykerFontelio, Marcus Jn Charles, Aquinus Lacombe and Ernest Downes scored one each.

In the final for the Plate Championship Valley Legends out of Mabouya Valley defeated Behind the College All Stars 1 – 0 in a match that could have gone either way as both teams had a number of scoring opportunities which they squandered.

With the score line locked at 0 – 0 at the half time whistle, it was anyone’s guess as to which team would lift the Plate Championship Trophy for the first time. On the resumption and like previous matches the first 20 minutes the two teams came firing at each other, but it would be a Nevel Harris strike in the 74 minute of play that would seal the deal for Valley Legends and the Plate trophy.

Following the showpiece on Sunday evening in Soufriere the various awards were presented; Fastest goal – Kenton Vitalis, 2nd minute of Match No. 8 Congorians Versus Micoud, Most Disciplined Team – VSADC; Goal of the Tournament – Ernest Downes, Most Goals – Jerome Serville; MVP of the Finals – Jerome Serville; MVP of the Tournament – Dabreo Henry.

For their victory Soufriere took home EC$ 7,000.00, the championship trophy and gold medals plus a brand new football kit costing EC$3000.00, while Congorians received EC$4,000.00, the second place trophy and silver medals.
