THE National Mental Wellness Centre is now operating on renewable energy, saving the country thousands of dollars monthly in electricity costs.

The official launching of the Solar PV System will take place at the auditorium of the National Mental Wellness Centre yesterday.

The hospital which provides specialised services to citizens suffering with mental illness, now has the capacity to generate 25 kilowatts of renewable energy .

The increase in the country`s renewable energy capacity from photovoltaic (PV) is consistent with government`s aim to increase generation of renewable energy penetration into the national grid by 35 percent by the year 2020. This will also help reduce the government’s overall electricity bill.

Currently the island has approximately 500kW of installed solar PV capacity.

The system at the National Mental Wellness Centre was funded by the Republic of China/Taiwan under the Sustainable energy from concept to action project.

It is a demonstration of the commitment by the government of Saint Lucia to equip important state institutions to support the country`s renewable energy transition while importantly maintaining critical services to most vulnerable citizens in times of need.

On February 26 this year, government officially launched a 25kW PV system at the National Energy Management Organisation (NEMO).
