A huge break has been given to the Salvation Army by high-end clothing store, Sea Island Cotton Shop in the form of a donation of clothes.

A total of 29 boxes of clothes were handed over to the SA’s Commanding Officer, Captain Dwayne Broome last week at the store’s northern branch in Rodney Bay.

The clothes consisted of items that were leftovers from discontinued ranges that were no longer able to be placed on the store’s shelves. The products however, were all still in pristine retail condition. The large selection was made after the clothing were discovered following an inventory audit at the beginning of the year.

The store’s general manager, Sherma Flavius said rather than destroy the clothes, put them on sale or give them away to staff members, it was decided that donating them would be the best option.

Flavius said: “Many disadvantaged persons lack the funds to provide an adequate wardrobe for themselves and their families, and this might hinder them in attaining economic advancement. For example, someone may struggle to put together an appropriate outfit for a job interview, or to meet with a banker to secure a micro-loan to start a business. With this donation it is hoped that the Salvation Army can better assist those individuals and families who might need a helping hand in that regard.”

Speaking on behalf of the SA, Captain Broome said this was a partnering that was months in the making and he was overjoyed when SICS approached them with the offer.

Captain Broome said that he greatly appreciated the donation, describing it as timely and welcome. The new clothes will not only supply the families in need, the homeless and victims of disasters, but it will also go towards a purpose that will help them further their main purposes.

“The clothes will help supply stocks so that we can continue our social programmes such as the feeding programme and other stuff that we do like general utilities and operations of the Salvation Army.”

Captain Broome said although monetary donations were important, this one would most certainly go a long way: “We have the thrift store which is our main source of income. You should help yourself. You shouldn’t always depend on the public even though we welcome items from the public donations, there must be something internal that you can do to generate income and keep the general operations going. With this donation, we can put them in the thrift store and sell them at reasonable prices.”

The estimated retail value of the donation is $40,000.
