Dinghy Sailing This Weekend

THE St. Lucia Yacht Club in collaboration with the St. Lucia Sailing Association / sponsored St. James Club Morgan Bay and IGY Marina is once again staging the National Dinghy Championships this weekend.

According to Regatta Director Lily Bergasse, this year the competition has moved to a new level as sailors from Martinique, Guadeloupe, St. Vincent and the Grenadines will compete against 34 young sailors from St.Lucia making a fleet of 50 boats on the waters of Rodney Bay from Friday afternoon through to Sunday.

Bergasse said, “Ten races are on the cards as the participants will compete in the Optimist and Laser classes in what will be an exciting and competitive weekend for all. Once again Beth Lygoe, radial laser champion for 2014 will challenge the Martiniquan laser, joined by Luc Chevrier, St. Lucia’s up and coming male radial laser sailor who will competing this summer in Canadian and French National Championships.

ST. Lucia’s Stephanie Devaux-Lovell who is presently in Europe competing, will be Toronto, to compete in the Pan American Games.

Said Bergasse: “In the Optimist class we have a fresh group of young Opti sailors who will make their mark this weekend and get the training needed for the North American Optimist Championships scheduled for Antigua and Barbuda next month”.

St. Lucia’s 4 Opti racers competing in the North American events are Danny Dillon, Guillaume Chevrier, Adonai Modeste and MatheoCapasso.

Meanwhile, persons wishing to see the races from the water are welcome to board the Spectator Catamaran on Saturday and Sunday leaving the dock at the marina from 8:30 a.m. and the Reduit Beach in front of the Yacht Club from 8:45 a.m. each day. The Yacht Club is open all weekend and welcomes all to come to view and support St. Lucia’s dinghy sailors.
