Schools Cycling A Success

THE second annual schools cycling championship organized by the Ministry of Youth Development and Sports in collaboration with the St.Lucia Cycling Association held on National Day saw some of the island’s young and aspiring cyclists getting a first hand experience of competition around a shorter version of the Castries City Circuit.

The small, but appreciative crowd on hand saw the riders compete in Mountain Bike, BMX, and Racer in five age categories.

According to the Ministry of Youth Development and Sports official Clivus Jules, the event was a success as there was an increase in participation and the level of competition was at an all time high compared to last year’s events.

Leading the charge in the 100 metres 10 and under was Jeanneil Emmanuel (La Ressource Combined), 2nd Livan Besse (Roblot Combined), 3rd Gillani Roberts ((Dame Pearlette Louisy).

In the 11 – 12 category Mountain Bike 2 laps first to cross the finish line was Ken Eugene (Corinth Secondary), 2nd Jeannot Walters (Camile Henry) and 3rd Que Anthony (Vide Bouteille Secondary). Girls 2 laps road bike – 1st Niya Polius (Ave Maria ), 2nd Janal Gittens (Micoud Secondary), 3rd Shaquan Joseph (Ave Maria).

There was no stopping Denzel Stephen from Choiseul Secondary and Horatius Nicolas (Soufriere Comprehensive) in the 100 metres Time Trial BMX for 13 – 14 boys. The two finished in a dead heat for the gold medal, 2nd was Neville Sonson( Soufriere Comprehensive) and 3rd Delan Glasford (Choiseul Secondary).

Road Bike 700 metres 13 – 14 boys – 1st Gelan O’ Brain (Micoud Secondary), 2nd Klivert Mitchel (Micoud Secondary) and 3rd Shornile Emmanuel (Clendon Mason Memorial). BMX 150 metres Mass Start – 1st Nerville Sonson (Soufriere Comprehensive), 2nd Delan Glasford (Choiseul Secondary), 3rd Denzel Stephen (Choiseul Secondary).

Mountain Bike 3 laps – 1st Aloysius Daniel (Vide Bouteille), 2nd Neville Sonson (Soufriere Comprehensive). Road Bike 5 laps – 1st Klivert Mitchel (Micoud Secondary), 2nd Gelan O’Brian (Micoud Secondary), and 3rd Shornile Emmanuel (Clendon Mason).

In the 15 – 16 category BMX 150 metres Mass Start 1st Keven Joseph (Choiseul Secondary), 2nd Zachery Joseph (Choiseul Secondary), 3rd Ricardo Jean (Choiseul Secondary).

In the Road Bike 700 metres race, Calixte Williams proved too strong for his opponents in the 15 – 16 category. Williams who represented SMC finished ahead of Janick Paul. In 2nd (SMC), and 3rd was Terriano Felicien (Clendon Mason),

Mountain Bike 5 laps – 1st Calixte Williams (SMC), Vernon Xavier (Choiseul Secondary), 3rd Jessie Jean (Choiseul Secondary). Road Bike 10 laps, 1st Klivert Mitchel (Micoud Secondary), 2nd Romeous Noel (Clendon Mason Memorial) Mountain Bike 5 laps – 1st Levan Modeste (Soufriere Comprehensive), 2nd Darius Jules (Grande Riviere Secondary).

During the medals presentation the following individuals received special awards, most outstanding cyclist: 13 – 14 years category Klivert Mitchell ( Micoud Secondary), 15 – 16 years Category: Calixte William, while the award for the most outstanding female cyclist went to Niya Polius (Ave Maria Girls Primary).
