Second “Start Up” Swim Meet Successful

To kick off what appears to be another hectic year for local swimmers on the island, the St. Lucia Amateur Swimming Association recently hosted its second annual “Start-Up” event for 2012. The weekend event was another in a series of developmental swim meets with a difference that attracted well over 120 participants at the Rodney Height Aquatic Centre.
According to SLASA General Secretary Joyce Huxley, the focus was firmly on the younger, developing swimmers, as all events were restricted to swimmers in the 6 and under, 7 - 8, 9 - 10 and 11-12 year age groups only.
Huxley further went on to say, the older swimmers were very much a part of the process, as many of them provided invaluable assistance by acting as timers or taking on the roles of other officials. Swimmers from six of the island’s swim clubs participated in the event, namely - Cobra, Lightening Aquatics, Racers, Sea Jays, Sharks and Southern Flying Fish respectively.

Many of the young athletes managed to record personal best times, despite having just returned to training following the Christmas break, a testament to the hard work and hours of dedication by the coaches and club administrators who work hard to ensure that the young athletes have every opportunity to shine in the pool.
SLASA’s next developmental swim meet will be the “Go the Distance” Meet on Sunday 26th February, where the emphasis will be on the longer distance events.
Meanwhile, SLASA has selected their outstanding swimmers for 2011. Junior Female -Siona Huxley, Senior Female - Danielle Beaubrun, Junior Male - Jordan Augier and Senior Male - Runako Daniel.
