MARKET STEPS SHOWDOWN
Anthony De Beauville

The Castries Market Steps known for all its hustle and bustle all week long will come alive on Sunday 5th February 2012 from approximately 3:00pm that’s when the St.Lucia Amateur Boxing Association will stage its most talked about city showdown. The event a first of its kind at that venue for the SLABA is sponsored by St.Lucia National Lottery Authorities.
Plans for the event was unveiled last week at a press conference that was held by the SLABA at the Wharf Restaurant located in Choc. This event according to the local federation is all in an effort to take the sport of boxing to the young people of St.Lucia to encourage them and motivate them to be involed in the sport of boxing.
Acting Interim President of the SLABA Joseph ‘Reds’ Perriera said, “Many years ago some members of the SLABA saw this in the inner city of the USA where a ring was put down at a cross section and it attracted thousands of boxing enthusiasts and we in the SLABA always thought this could be possible in St.Lucia as well. After months of discussion we believe the Market Steps will be an ideal place.“
Perriera further went on to say, “We will not be affecting the flow of traffic through the Castries city because we will not be on the side closest to the arcade, but will be on the side heading towards Chaussee Road.”

The former renowned cricket commentator believes the Castries Market Showdown will be an interesting and exciting one as this will be a new day for amateur boxing in St.Lucia. In the past the SLABA has had a good track record for taking amateur boxing to various communities throughout the island. Perriera also believes that people not only from Castries and its environs will come out and support, but those from far and wide will come and show their appreciation as well.
For the many coming to lend their support Perriera said, “The public will witness at least 12 bouts for the afternoon. The Showtime ring that was donated to the SLABA by friends of the late Sir John Compton will be in use.
The St.Lucia Amateur Boxing Association has already sort permission from the Castries City Council for the use of the Castries Market Steps and the closure of the road by the Royal St.Lucia Police Force.
Meanwhile, SLABA Public Relations Officer Brian Mc Donald who was also at the meeting said that the following boxers will be in action on the day, Lyndell Marcellin – Senior Boxer of the year for 2011, Alex Poyotte – Junior Boxer for the year for 2011, Arthur Langillier, Yanic Leon, Travis Maynard, Ron Bastien, Thomas Henville, Dalton George, Kyghan Mortley, Miguel Auguste, Giovanni Ermay, Roni Samuel, Darius Cetoute, Brad Lewis, Akim Griffith and Kyle Adey.
