IN THE RED CORNER….
Anthony De Beauville

With just hours away before the Castries Market Steps transform into a Caesars Palace type atmosphere, the St.Lucia Amateur Boxing Association will stage its most talked about boxing showdown exhibition scheduled to commence at 3:00 pm bell time.
Like previous outings in the town of Gros Islet and the village of Denney which saw huge crowds attending, Sunday’s blue and red corner fights is expected to surpassed all expectations as a record number of boxing enthusiasts is expected to gather way before the 3:00pm start in search of a perfect viewing point.
A number of the boxers on Sunday afternoon’s card last year represented St. Lucia at the Creole Boxing Championship in Gaudeloupe and the Ronald Wilson Memorial Championship in Barbados with a barrage of medals to their name. The crowd favourite Lyndell “The Russian” Marcellin will lead the charge along with Alex Poyotte, Arthur Langilier, Miguel Auguste and despite what is expected to be a humid afternoon according to the latest weather update, the four boxers mentioned above will certainly turn on the heat a few more notches.
In terms of development, the SLABA will use Sunday card to showcase not only their top boxers, but some of their promising junior boxers like Brad Louis, Jamal Mitchel, Joshua Brown and Dimitri Charlery.

Meanwhile, Acting Interim President of the SLABA, Joseph ‘Reds’ Perriera said, “Certainly we would like to see the benefits from this Market Steps exhibition. We hope that the vendors will benefit, the general public will benefit and the boxers will benefit from the whole occasion. For some of them it maybe their largest audience. For the Association, we would like to benefit by winning the hearts and minds of the young people, we are also hoping that some private sector people or companies will come to watch and in the not too distance future invest in amateur boxing in St. Lucia.”
The St Lucia National Lottery is the main sponsor of this boxing showpiece along with Blue Waters and Monster.
The many boxing fans coming from near and far to lend their support will see the following matchup carded for the afternoon - Lyndell ‘the Russian’ Marcellin versus Ron Bastien, Travis Maynard versus Yanic Leon, Leroy James take on Alex Poyotte, Julian Agiou will fight from the red corner against Arthur Langellier, Kyghan Mortley versus Nyron David, Mervin Phillip will look to fancy his chances versus Joshua Brown , the experienced Miguel Auguste will be up against Giovanni Ermay, Dimitri Charlery versus Akim Griffith, Brad Louis take on Jamal Mitchel, Heslie Louis versus Trevor Lynch, Joshua Duberry will fight Philus James from the blue corner and Adolf Augustin take on Ricardo Samuel.
