DRAMA AT STADIUM

While mother nature continues to beat down mercilessly on the island with still no sign of rain in the distance, students representing the various schools took to the George Odlum Stadium in Vieux Fort on Day One in the field events of the 2010 Inter Secondary Schools Championships.
The events included on the day’s program saw participants in the Long Jump, Shot-Putt, High Jump, Javelin, Triple-Jump, and Discus competing in divisions One, Two, and Three in the male and female categories. Despite the blazing sun, and the presence of the St. Jude’s Hospital within the confines of the facility which dictated the near sterile nature of the event, the students set about challenging each other to bring out the best in all competitors for their schools.
Interestingly and sitting comfortably one must say in first place with one more throw remaining, Darrel St. Phor of the Corinth Secondary School thought his 11.49 metres was sufficient to win him Division Two Shot Putt gold. However, his teammate Flonel James stepped up to the challenge and put the Shot at 11.89 metres on his last attempt to snatch gold, from a shocked St. Phor.
The drama did not end there. Cherise Gonzague of St. Joseph’s Convent, competing in the Shot Putt event for Division One girls had taken the lead with a Put of 8.25 metres on her very first attempt, but Tamara Descartes of Piaye Secondary School summoned the power within to draw level with a throw of 8.25 metres.

With the pressure on both ladies, Descartes next best throw was 7.54 metres; sufficient for her to take the gold, while Gonzague took silver on her next best throw of 7.51 metres. Elvisa Joseph of the George Charles Secondary School, whose best throw was 7.51 metres won the bronze.
Hilarian Smith of the Soufriere Comprehensive Secondary School, battling with back pains, dug deep to register a distance of 9.59 metres in the Boys Division One Shot Putt.
His effort was enough to secure him the gold medal, and Rick Joseph of the Piaye Secondary School who looked capable of winning the top prize, had to settle for silver with a throw of 9.23 metres.
In the long jump event, 16-year-old Jeffery Estephane of the Micoud Secondary School took the gold in the Boys First Division long jump with a leap of 6.30 metres. Estephane was not given a free rein as Quincy Fevrier of St. Mary’s College kept the pressure on but his best leap of 6.13 metres was just sufficient to earn him the silverware ahead of Edwin Emmanuel of Micoud Secondary School with a distance of 5.99 metres.
