09th March 2010
TOP CLASS VOLLEYBALL
Anthony De Beauville

It was dubbed one day, one venue, one chance and one road to victory and by all indications it did live up to its expectations as the 2009 Association of the year the St. Lucia Volleyball Association staged another exciting tournament at the Beseaujour Indoor Practice Facility in Gros Islet .
The 2010 Independence Day Knock – Out Tournament saw a Kaleidoscope of colours with clubs represented by their male and female teams with a number of past and present national players on their roster. It was not a day for speeches, rather the opening ceremony saw the march past of teams, National Anthem, Prayers, Athletes and Officials Oaths; then it was the turn of Brian Louisy President of SLVB to declare the Tournament open and to spike off the showpiece.
In game one on Court # 2 Jetsetters male team made light work of Dig Set Point defeating them 25 - 15, 25 - 18, while Le Club Mothers some of yesteryears’ past national players that included Carol Faucher, Joanna Reynolds - Atherton, Rebecca Flemius, and Valarina St.Helen went past Jetsetters 25 - 17, 25 -14 in an exciting encounter on Court # 1.
In the second match – up of the day Le Club after being one set down with some determination was still able to nose ahead of TBB 23 - 25, 25 -12 and 15 -9 to claim victory, while it was sweet revenge for DSP females as they defeated Evolucian females in another encounter 19 - 25, 25 - 22 and 17 - 15 to ensure themselves a place into the second round.
Though they arrived late the scores really do not reflect how well they played versus Evolucian, as the boys from the east coast (Micoud) went down in straight sets 25 – 12 and 25 – 16, and so too did DSP as Le Club - U Female team with the experienced Dania Hamilton, Sancha Isidore, Petal Isidore and Emma Edgar in its line up went past their opponents 25- 19 and 25 – 14 in quick time.

They continued where they left off last year in the Guy Memorial Tournament and with such a performance at the BIPF it appeared that they have signaled their intention. The Jetsetters male team left no stone unturned versus one of the tournament’s favourites Le Club as they squeezed past their arch rivals in two nail biting sets 27-25 and 25 - 21, but Jet Setters ladies were made to fight till the end against the ever improving Evolucian team for fourth and 5th place respectively. Jetsetters winning 25 - 20, 24 - 26, 15 -11.
For the third place silverware in the Men’s division Le Club went ahead to win 24 - 26, 25 -15 and 15 – 11 against Dig Set Point after a scintillating first set that went in favour of DSP with the likes of # 12 Raymond O’Keife, # 3 Stephen Felix, # 1 Terry Verdant, # 7 Aaron Simon on their roster.
It was an all Le Club ladies’ final and from my vantage point it was certainly a joy to watch as well, for those who planned on staying till the end will agree they never regretted the time spent at the BIPF as Le Club - U was made to fight to the bitter end versus their more senior counterparts on the evening to win 21 - 25, 25 -19 and 25 – 21. The Men’s final was a one-sided affair on Court # 1 as Jetsetters made light work of their opponents Evolucian beating them 25 - 11, 25 – 16 to capture the 2010 Independence Knock – Out Cup.
