Out Districts Dominate Secondary School Road Race
Anthony De Beauville

Running on what can best described as his home turf, up and coming long distance runner 2009 Carifta 3000 metres gold medalist Rolstan Pamphile won his first major Inter Secondary School Road Race on Friday in a time of 50 minutes :08:82 seconds in the process beating some old rivals who on the day were no match for the man from the Choiseul Secondary School despite encountering problems with a build up of lactic acid.
The race began just after 10:00 am due to a late start near the entrance of Daher Building on the main Vieux Fort Highway. The runners turned left into the La Ressource Highway over looking the GOS, then turned left onto the St. Jude’s Highway at the junction next to WLBL to its junction with the Laborie – Vieux-Fort Highway, and to the eventual finish line outside the Daher Building.
As the runners made their way to the Hewanorra International Airport entrance and Winera in striking distance it was all Ed Joseph, Lionel, Pamphile, and Etienne in that order in the lead pack, and from my vantage point it was apparent that the four front runners would leave nothing to chance. However as the pace increased it was Ed Joseph that would succumbed to fatigue and the humid conditions leaving Lionel, Pamphile and Etienne to battle it out.

As the race progressed the eventual winner interestingly stopped on a number of occasions on the route only to be encouraged by what one can best describe as a compassionate competitor in the person of Manassah Etienne of the Piaye Secondary School who after crossing the finish line into second place in a time of 50:17:69 secs was disappointed with himself for not applying the necessary pressure on Pamphile to the end. Aaron Lionel of the Choiseul Secondary School was third in 51:19:87 secs, while Mitch Alexander of Clendon Mason Secondary secured the fourth place in 52:15:17 secs.
Running all alone in the distance after the Pamphile had already won the boys’ category some 17 minutes earlier was Lyla Joseph of the Piaye Secondary School who ran bare-footed most of the distance to be the first lady home in 1 hour 07:49 seconds. Johnita Gustave of the Vieux-Fort Technical School was second in 1hr 11:36 seconds, Darnel Serieux of the Micoud Secondary School was third in a time of 1 hr 11:56 seconds, while fourth and fifth places went to Stephanie Leonce and Ash Leopold from the Choiseul Secondary School in a time of 1hr 20:42 and 1 hr 22:36 respectively to round off the top five places to make it a clean sweep for the out district schools in the top five.
