Independence Cup, a battle to the end

After staging two successful tournaments in St.Lucia under the NORCEA banner, The St. Lucia Volleyball Association is at it again, keeping the ball flying across court. Dubbed a successful season in 2009, SLVB recently captured the prestigious title of Association of the Year at the National Sports Awards held at the Gaiety.
On Sunday 6th March 2010 SLVB will be hosting its most talked about Annual Independence Knock - Out Cup Tournament. The event which was initially scheduled for Sunday 28th February was postponed due to concerns over the availability of water at the Beausejour Indoor Facility on that day. The showpiece is scheduled to commence at 9:30 am with a short opening ceremony, with the first match – up spiking off at 10:00 am on the buzzer.
According to Dania Hamilton all the participating teams and clubs are from around the island as they competed in the 2009 Bank of St. Lucia (BOSL) Guy Brown Memorial League Tournament and will bring that much added flavour and kaleidoscope under one roof.
In the male division, defending league champions Jetsetters Volleyball club will compete against runners up Le Club Volleyball and Evolucian Volleyball, Turtle Beach Ballers and the Dig Set Point volleyball club. One can almost be certain that this tournament will be no walk in the park for the defending champions, as President of the Association Brian Louisy, has returned to the coaching arena and is now trying to guide his former Club Team, Le Club Volleyball. Former national coach Terry Verdant will lead Dig Set Point Volleyball club who did not compete in the 2009 BOSL Guy Brown Memorial League Tournament.
In the female division, champions Le Club will do battle with runners up Jetsetters Volleyball, Dig Set Point Volleyball, Evolucian Volleyball and the veterans of the Le Club Volleyball team. The Le Club veteran team or the “Le Club Mothers” as they call themselves has promised to make this tournament a very exciting one as they have vowed to come back even better than before.

Interestingly amongst the list of players included are former national players and 2007 Senior Female Volleyballer of the Year Samantha Mann, Deputy Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Social Transformation, Youth and Sports, Joanna Reynolds- Atherton, former national setter and Captain Rebecca Flemius, Gifta Dujon and Carol Faucher two long time leading players and Valarina St. Helen will be part of the line up.
Le Club will feature their slew of current national players like 2008 and 2009 St. Lucia senior female Volleyballer of the year and 2009 nominee for sportswoman of the year Dania Hamilton, the dynamic sister duo; 2008 junior Volleyballer of the year Sancha Isidore and 2008 youth and 2009 junior Volleyballer of the year Petal Isidore. Other outstanding players will include Saralee Williams, Ulanda Antoine, Tramaine Edward and Emma Edgar.
The names mentioned above certainly carry Volleyball credentials. Service, Set, Spike,:- this Independence Knock – Out Cup will be a battle to the end at the BIF.
Sunday’s event is in a knock-Out format where teams will be seeded according to the 2009 BOSL Guy Brown Memorial League final standings. In the event of an odd number of participating teams, the winner of the 2009 BOSL Guy Brown Memorial League Tournament (Le Club Volleyball in the female division and Jetsetters Volleyball in the male division) will receive a bye into round two. Where six teams are participating, a re-seed will take place after the first round, giving the team with the best margin a bye into the final round of the tournament.
