March 2010
A championship with a
difference
It
was a Championship with a difference as the
St. Lucia Athletics Association staged one of
its major events dubbed “Training session
for 2010” to coincide with St. Lucia’s
31st Independence Celebrations that were held
at the make shift medical facility located at
the George Odlum Stadium in Vieux – Fort.
Interestingly the GOS remains as the only stadium
in the world to house a Hospital.
Under hot and humid conditions and like in previous
years a number of secondary schools, clubs and
individuals participated, but this time around
without the typical fanfare for an event of
that nature. A total of 44 events were carded
on the programme which started off with the
100 metres races in all divisions, and as the
sun set in the west the few that were on hand
witnessed the exciting 4 x 400 metres relay
race in the men’s division to bring the
curtains down. Speed Printing Survivors nosed
ahead of Road Busters and Blazers Athletics
in a time of (3:27:75 secs) to capture the gold
medal.
Abilene Verlyn Taylor in the junior ladies had
something to shout about as she, the fastest
amongst her peers assured herself a podium place
with a gold medal in a time of (12:52 secs),
so too did Pernell Mitchel also from Abilene
in the ladies division in a time of (12:13 secs).
In the boys 100m Arnold Nicarge, Morne Stars
was the fastest in the four heats run in that
division winning gold in a time of (11:08 secs),
while Kirby Anthony made light work in the Men
to win in (11:07 secs).
In the girls 200m it was all Verlyn Taylor (25:69
secs) representing Abilene to pick up her second
gold medal on the day. The ladies 200m saw a
clean sweep for Abilene, Pernell Mitchel, Gold
in (25:00 secs) Desma Victor, silver in (25:31
secs) and Peterlyn Edward, Bronze in (25:77
secs). Jonathan Celestine proved that he’s
still the fastest junior on the island pocketing
the gold medal in the 200m in a time of (22:15
secs), while Richard Lovence showed some brilliance
to capture the Men’s 200m in (21:74 secs)
and the 400m in a time of ( 50:42 secs).
In the 400m for junior Boys the twin brothers
of Rosen and Ross Daniel representing Survivors
captured gold and bronze in a time of (50:12
secs) and (53:00 secs) respectively. Survivors’
female athletes Zhayna Spooner and Kara - Lee
Emmanuel also had their podium chances as they
won gold and silver in the Girls 400m in (1:02:17
secs) and (1:04:42 secs). Peterlyn Edward and
Mercia Mon Cherry kept the Abilene flag flying
to win gold and silver despite some of its members
deflecting to form a new club called Night Riders
. The two ladies crossed the finish line in
(58:74 secs) and (58:93 secs) respectivley.

Certainly it was a joy to
watch and be convinced that middle distance
running in St.Lucia is alive. In the girls
800m Mary Roberts – Bocage Secondary
(2:31:21secs), Che Nevais – Night Riders
(2:34:31 secs) and Sadia Chandler –
Survivors (2:36:74 secs) gave scintillating
performances and must be commended for their
efforts. It was all Road Busters in the boys
800m as they made a clean sweep of the opposition
to win the first four places. Dylon Henry
(1:58:19 secs) proved a bit to much for Michael
James, Silverius Vidal and Fanashua Stanislaus,
while Neville Dupre continued his good run
on from for 2010 running away with the men’s
800m in (2:11:73 secs).
It was sweet revenge for Survivors’
Shauna Matthew this time in the girls 1500m
as she captured gold in a time of (7:10:32
secs) ahead of Night Riders - Che Nevais in
(7:26:59secs). Micheal James and Silverius
Jr Vidal was a class act as they won gold
and silver in the boys 1500m in (4:24:04 secs
and 4:29:71 secs). The hurdles event had its
share of excitement in the 100m for ladies,
Survivors’ Jeanelle Scheper winning
in a time of (15:08 secs) to secure her the
gold medal, while Delphinus Consterbel captured
Night Riders first medal in the boys 100m
hurdles in (18:54 secs).
2009 Carifta gold medalist in the Pole Vault
Shem Edward representing Night Riders brushed
aside the opposition to win gold with a height
of (3.55 metres), while Leanna Emmanuel secured
the gold for Gros Islet Secondary with a height
of (1.90 metres) . The ladies long jump saw
Jeanelle Scheper picking up her second gold
of the day with a distance (5.29 metres) ahead
of compatriots Lynell Esnard (4.98 metres)
silver, and Venica Casimir (4.55 metres) for
the bronze. The men’s segment saw Morne
Stars athletes dominating as they captured
the top three places, Darren Anderson (6.40
metres), Nicarge Arnold (6.38 metres) and
Robert Robinson (6.07 metres) respectively.
Anderson was again in winners row as he went
on to win the Men’s Triple Jump with
a leap of (13.77 metres).
Elite’s, Albert Reynolds(63.00 metres)
in the Men’s javelin to capture the
gold medal ahead of Morne Stars’, Kevin
Lesporis (52.57 metres). Emmish Prospere (49.01
metres) was way below his personal best of
(69.00 metres), while in the junior category
Survivors’ Triston James made his first
podium appearance with a distance of (31.05
metres) to win gold.
