4th Annual Soufriere Open Water Swim Meet a success

The St. Lucia Amateur Swimming Association (SLASA) successfully hosted the Fourth Annual Soufriere Open Water Swimming Challenge at the weekend in conjunction with the Soufriere Marine Management Association in the Soufriere Bay.
Anse Chastanet Resort, Jade Mountain and Paradise Springs were the main sponsors for the event providing funding for the medals, trophies and T-Shirts, as well as boat coverage, safety personnel, kayaks for safety patrols and water to swimmers and officials.
With over 40 swimmers coming from the ranks of the competition pool trained athletes from Castries, an impressive contingent from Vieux Fort, and swimmers from Soufriere, there was competition aplenty to entertain the crowd that came to take in some of the action. There was a great atmosphere with good representation by members of Baron’s Drive Youth Organization in Soufriere, a club run by Felicia Clauzelma.
Public Relation Officer of the SLASA said, “The Open Water races included a 1 kilometer event plus the pier-to-pier (100 meters) which provided the most entertainment with all the swimmers participating.” He further went on to say, “All the Castries competitive swimmers dominated, and the Soufrierians clearly impressed with most completing the course in respectable times. The event highlighted the depth of talent in the coastal towns and the need to provide programs for these talented athletes”
“During the 1 km event, there were kayaks for safety cover, and many thanks for the hard work of all the Kayakers who also ensured that the swimmers were all accompanied along the course”. The action continued in the 9 – 10 boys – 1st Christian Foster, RACERS, Castries 2:12.15, 2nd Shalom Leon, SFF Soufriere 2:21.80, 3rd. Jarnell Butcher, BDYO, Soufriere 2:25.40, 4th Shahid Joseph, BDYO, Soufriere 2:29.53, 5th Keon Charlemagne, BDYO, Soufriere 2:29.53 and 6th Jordan Lamontagne, SFF, Soufriere - 3:26.94. 10 and under girls – 1st Gabrielle Marshall, SFF, Vieux Fort - 2:00.70, 2nd Eden Crick, Sharks, Castries 2:17.37, 3rd Jasmin Healey, SFF, Vieux Fort 2:29.38, 4th Yolande Ambrose, SFF, Vieux Fort 2:42.25, 5th Crissie Josephine, SFF, Vieux Fort 2:57.38 and 6th Nichelle Paul, BDYO, Soufriere DNF.

Evelyn Day, Sharks, Castries took charge of the 11 – 14 girls category to win in a time of 1:31.18, 2nd Bailey Spiegelbery, Sharks, Castries - 1:33.74, 3rd Naomi Helleman, SFF, Vieux fort 1:53.98, 4th Jahny Fontinelle , SFF, Vieux Fort 1:54.94, 5th Antonia Joseph, BDYO, Soufriere 2:06.72, 6th Joelline Saunders, SFF, Vieux Fort 2:08.25 and 7th Marie Burke, BDYO, Soufriere DNF.
In the 15 and over boys senior male swimmer for 2009 Julien Brice representing , Sharks, Castries crossed the finish line in a time of 1:13.04 to be followed by Jon-L Innocent-Dolor, Sharks, Castries 1;16.25, 3rd Darren Francis, BDYO, Soufriere 1:45.30, 4th Kenny Nicholas, BDYO, Soufriere 1:47.30 and 5th Ian Francis, SFF, Vieux Fort 2;00.83. While in the 15 and over girls Siona Huxley, Sharks, Castries made light work of Vanessa Eugene SFF, Vieux Fort to win in a time of 1; 26.88, Eugene’s time was 1:48.20.
Following the event trophies for the fastest male and female were captured by Julien Brice and Siona Huxley, Interestingly six year-old Ian Spiegelberg was the youngest to tackle the Two-Pier sprint.
Meanwhile, President of SLASA, Dr Marcus Day was gratified with the effort, turnout and results and extended thanks to the sponsors, Anse Chastanet and Jade Mountain and Paradise Water,
