Ten for Boxing Match-up in Martinique

It is their first outing for the year and after weeks of intense training, St. Lucian boxers will have another opportunity to showcase their skills against regional opposition, that is when a contingent of ten boxers and two officials is expected to leave here today Thursday 4th March 2010 to participate in a boxing tournament in the neighboring island of Martinique. The year 2009 saw St.Lucia Boxers take on their Martiniquan counterparts on three successful occasions.
Interestingly nine of the ten boxers were part of a St.Lucia contingent who participated at the inaugural Creole Boxing Championships that was held in the French speaking island of Guadeloupe in December 2009, following the cancellation of the OECS Boxing Championship that was scheduled for St.Lucia and the Caribbean Boxing Championship in Barbados.

The team travelling includes nine males and one female. The boxers making the trip to Martinique are Darius Cetoute, Garfield Jean, Miguel Auguste, Josiah Augustin, Dalton George, Ron Bastien, Travis Maynard, Lyndell Marcellin, Adolph Agustine, and lone female boxer Lisa Alexander. One noticeable absentee on the squad due to work commitments is Giovanni Ermay, at the recently held National Sports Awards at the Gaiety; Ermay copped the Boxer for the Year title for 2009.
Accompanying the team to the French speaking island of Martinique will be St. Lucian based Cuban Coach Renaldo Toledo. While in Martinique the team will be under the watchful eyes of Second Vice President of the ABA George Alfred as Manager. The Tournament in Martinique commences tomorrow Friday 5th March and concludes the following day. According to the SLABA the boxers are scheduled to return home on Sunday.
