March 2010
Oriole CCSS
Champions
There
was no stopping Oriole House at the annual Castries
Comprehensive Secondary School Inter House Track
and Field Championships for 2010, held at the
school ground. The event took place under a
scorching sun with a very light westerly breeze
and the sea a stone’s throw away. Oriole
compiled 603 points, only a close 8 points clear
from second place finisher Heron with 595, Amazona
571 and Finch 465 points respectively after
the final scores were tallied.
Interestingly, the participating athletes representing
the four houses gave it their all in their bid
for a place on the school’s team for this
year’s Inter Secondary Schools Championships
which are still in the balance because whether
to have them or not remains a mystery. Major
works continues at Mindoo Phillip Park for the
ICC Twenty20 World Cup, and the George Odlum
Stadium in Vieux Fort remains the premiere Hospital
facility in the South of the island.
From my vantage point there were many notable
performances. Anicia Nurse of Amazona won gold
in the 80m Division 1 girls in a time of (11:23
secs) ahead Tamra Emmanuel of Heron in (11:43
secs). Promising 14 year old Shauna Matthew,
an athlete to keep an eye on for the future,
representing Heron in Division 2 girls, ran
away with the 800m in a time of ( 2:44:70 secs)
ahead of Favienne Dupre of Amazona in a time
of (3:02:29 secs). Matthew again was in blistering
form minutes later in the 1500m winning in a
time of (6:17:87 secs)
The 2010 road race champion Christopher St.
Catherine continued his good run on form representing
Oriole in Division 1 boys as he made light work
of the opposition in the 800m and 1500m to win
in (2:15:59 secs) and (5:1440 secs) respectively.
Finch Zylon Moise was big on the day winning
the 200m Division 1 boys in (26:18 secs), while
Hane Mathurin also of Finch copped the silver
in 26:22 secs. Dexter Samuel keep Amazona’s
flag flying in the 200m Division 2 Boys. Samuel’s
time was 27:33 secs ahead of Lemtus Joseph and
Tristan James both of Oriole in 27:84 secs and
27:92 secs respectively.

The 400m Division
3 girls Kayshama Smith representing Amazona
emerge as champion in 1:16:15 secs, while
Sheris Andre of Finch and Alexandra Terrance
of Heron had to settle for the silver and
Bronze in times of 1:17:75 secs and 1:21:89
secs.
As the shadows started to lengthen on the
square so too did the excitement in the relay
races, In the 4 x 100m Division 1 Boys it
was all Finch in a time of 50:08 secs, Oriole
2nd in 51:89 secs and Heron 3rd in 52:73 secs,
Amazona ladies also came out strong in Division
1 Girls to win in a time of 59:08 secs, Heron
was 2nd in 1:00:94 secs and Oriole 3rd in
1:03:88 secs. In division 2 Boys Heron picked
up the gold in a time of 51:37 secs, Finch
the silver in 51:96 secs, while Oriole had
to settle for the bronze in 55:67 secs. Amazona
ladies in Division 2 continued their good
run on form to win ahead of Heron and Finch
in 1:00:24 secs.
The 4x400m relay was a close call for Amazona,
Heron and Oriole, In the Division 1 Boys Heron
made light work of Oriole and Finch to win
in 3:59:09 secs. It was sweet revenge for
Amazona Girls as they swept the opposition
aside to win the gold in 5:13:96 secs, Heron
2nd 5:19:37 secs and Oriole 3rd in 5:37:11
secs. Oriole won the Division 2 Boys to win
in a time 4:04:91 secs, while Amazona ladies
picked up the gold ahead of Hezron and Oriole
in 5:07:91 secs,
The final event of the afternoon saw Finch
house picking up their second gold medal in
the relays as their Division 3 Boys proved
to strong for Oriole and Heron to win in a
time 4:31: 35 secs, and to settle the deal
for 2010 Amazona Girls were again in winners
row as their Division 3 team captured their
third gold medal in as many races in 5:03:67
secs.
