Deterville trio takes Anse -la- Raye top places

Scores of Anse-la-Raye residents, along with visitors from the cruise ships, lined Mole Street in Anse-la-Raye to cheer, and in case of the visitors, to photograph the runners participating in the 2010 annual Anse La Raye School’s 5 kilometer Road Race.
The race started at Roseau, through Massacre, Au Tabor, along, Mole Street, and then onto the finish at the school. When the starter’s signal went, Sharnique Modeste of Mandela House took an early lead as the pack of runners surged up the bottom of the Massacre Hill. Slowly but surely, a small lead pack overtook the main group.
Mervin Auguste, leading that small group, had Junior Ferguson and Fanis Edward for company,- all three runners from Modeste House. Unfortunately, Auguste stopped at least four times on the uphill climb to recover, which allowed the two other runners to overtake him.
Fanis Edward then grabbed the opportunity and passed Junior Ferguson three-quarter way up the slope, and like an experienced runner, increased the tempo, placing more pressure on his opponents.
Ferguson was unable to respond but remained within striking distance, with Auguste holding on to the third place. At one point, though Edward’s left sock came off and he went to retrieve it, he nevertheless continued his punishing pace and in the process opened up a 100-metre lead.
The trio in the lead pack was in the same positions, but upon entering the halfway stage of the race at Au Tabor, Edward gradually began to increase his pace, pounding the roadway with a determined and focused composure.

Running down the last slope to the village, Edward began to sprint, and with residents of Anse-la-Raye coming out in support, he began to smile, knowing that victory was his as long as he stayed the course.
Across the Anse-la-Raye Bridge, he turned left onto Mole Street and a roar of support went up as the residents could not believe that one so small in stature could have completed the road race course in so quick a time.
He crossed the finish line at the school gates in 22 minutes 11 seconds, with Junior Ferguson second in a time of 22 minutes 32 seconds; while Mervin Auguste came in third in 22 minutes 42 seconds.
Sharnique Modeste won the Girls Road Race in a time of 24 minutes 16 seconds ahead of Kerdidra Edmund of Sobers House in a time of 24 minutes 20 seconds, and third was Dezar Mauricette of Deterville House in a time of 27 minutes 34 seconds.
At the end of the Road Race, Deterville House amassed a total of 60 points to emerge victorious, Mandela House and Sobers House a close second and third with 23 and 22 points respectively, Walcott House were finished fourth with 11 points.
Physical Education Teacher Cosmos Robinson said he was very pleased with the support of all, including the police officers who went out of their way to assist with the transportation of some equipment back to the school. According to Robinson, he looked forward to when the primary schools could have their own road race to determine which school or district is best.
