NCF School Chess Tournament at Blue Coral

The exciting game of Chess continues to flourish in St. Lucia with the organization of tournaments between some of the island’s schools. The Chess in Schools project is being managed by the National Community Foundation (NCF).
According to Juliana Alfred the initiative was implemented in November of 2005 through a pilot project comprising nine schools. The NCF Director further went on to say, that the interest in Chess has grown tremendously and to date well over twenty five schools at all levels of the system are part of the Chess in Schools project.

The NCF will be hosting the EC Global Annual Chess tournament on Wednesday 7th July 2010 commencing from 9:30 at the Blue Coral Mall. To date at least 20 primary and secondary schools have registered in an attempt to dethrone last year’s champions , St Mary’s College.
Interestingly, Juliana said, “The goal of the Chess-In-Schools project is to use chess as a medium to help develop critical thinking skills, build self-esteem, engender discipline, foster positive social skills, promote academic achievement and empower children to succeed. Chess has been shown to improve thinking skills as well as academic performance.”
Meanwhile, the NCF is scheduled to receive its sponsorship cheque of over $7,000.00 from EC Global, a subsidiary of the Eastern Caribbean Financial Holding Company Limited in the coming days.
