30th January 2010
Soufriere SLFA under-19 Football Champions

It was celebration time for the boys from the town of Gros Islet as they went on to defeat Canaries convincingly 4 – 2 in the third place play off of the National Under - 19 Football Tournament at the Mini Stadium in Soufriere.
Looking relaxed and sharper on the square the Gros Islet team meant business from the first whistle, and in so doing their key player Troy Greenidge was the man of the hour as he went on to score a hattrick with goals in the 5th, 25th, and 70th minute to put the issue beyond doubt and Canaries’ reach. Eden Charles scored in the 49th minute to seal the deal. David Henry pulled one back scoring for Canaries in the 30th minute, while Terbius Stephen doubling it from the penalty spot in the 59th minute, was simply not enough on the afternoon.
At the half time whistle the score was 2 – 1 in favour of Gros Islet. Indeed it was a much better performance from the Gros Islet team on the square compared to what they exhibited in the semi final round where they squandered a number of easy scoring opportunities in front of goal versus Soufriere that eventually won the 2010 tournament.
The finals played between Soufriere and Central Castries lived up to all expectations and many spectators who came to lend their support were treated to a very high brand of attacking football by both teams. However, it was Soufriere who took the lead in the 41st minute when they were awarded a penalty which was clinically converted by their captain Eric Francois. Immediately this sparked off jubilation in the Stands the majority of whom being home supporters. Soufriere ended the first half with a one nil advantage.

On the resumption both teams came out firing on all cylinders, and Central Castries playing better in midfield took the game to their opponents. However, they soon found themselves at a disadvantage when one of their key defensive players picked up a second yellow card thus reducing them to ten men. This seemed to spur them on and they were rewarded when Valdez Maximim found the back of the nets in the 78th minute.
Interestingly from there onwards both teams kept counter attacking seeking for that elusive winner. This Central Castries thought they had achieved just minutes before the final whistle when they found the back of their opponent’s net. Their jubilation was short lived as the Assistant Referee had his flag up and in consultation with the Referee the goal was disallowed on the basis of a player being ruled offside.
Soon after the final whistle went with the scores being 1-1. Central Castries must have felt hard done by that decision. The Game then went into Penalties and a cool and composed Soufriere team emerged victorious 4 - 1.
Immediately following what can best described as a showpiece Valdez Maximim of Central Castries was awarded the Most Valuable Player in the Final. Congratulations to the Soufriere Team for winning the championship trophy.
