Jason Sayers wins SLAA 5km
Anthony De Beauville

There was no stopping long distance runner Jason Sayers who overcame all challengers to comprehensively run away with the Annual St. Lucia Athletics Association 5 kilometer Road Race as he crossed the finish line in a time of 16 minutes 10: 23 seconds.
Sayers who was at the time running topless already has two previous wins under his belt on that route band, took a commanding lead in the early stages of the race, after he escaped from the main pack bringing along with him Wayne St. Ange and Neville Dupre as the runners made their way through Bella Rosa.
Known for his calmness in events like these Sayers moved steadily along phase 1 of the Beseaujour housing scheme with the BCG in the distance with no immediate competition challenging him. From here on to the end, it was the sound of vehicles behind him and the normal on the side on - lookers showing their support, with St.Ange and Dupre in striking distance keeping him company to the finish line.
After he entered the home stretch it seemed to be just a matter of time that Sayers would emerge as the winner of the male category with an impressive time of 16 minutes 10:23 seconds. Sayers was elated with his performance and pointed out as the race progressed, “I stepped up the pace and continued to put on the pressure. I kept myself refreshed with water along the way to keep down the late afternoon heat, and concentrated on maintaining a smooth speed right to the finish.”
It is still early days as the likes of Olympian Zepherinus Joseph and Victor Ledgers took a well deserved rest from this event after a hectic 2009 season. Sayers’ closest rival, Neville Dupre was second in a time of 16 minutes 12:28 seconds ahead of the experienced Wayne ‘Ali’ St. Ange who finished third in 17 minutes 25:53 seconds, while 2009 Carifta hopeful Michael James continued his good run on form and came in fourth in 18 minutes 01:05 seconds.

Veteran long distance runner Anthony Neptune still good at his game was 10th across the finish line in a time of 19 minutes 23: 43 seconds, while Asa Lionel representing Rockets turned the heat on to be the youngest to finish,- certainly one for the future in road running in St. Lucia. Lionel finished in a time of 19 minutes 40:89 seconds.
Back on the circuit was former female national long distance Candia Esnard – Masey. Esnard – Masey on the afternoon turned on the heat on the other two female competitors in the event to win in a time of 25 minutes 55:76 seconds, Fernanda Sealy copped the silver in a time of 26 minutes 24:49 seconds, while Perlina Murray had to settle for the bronze medal in a time of 32 minutes 01:60 seconds. A total of 20 competitors took part in the event and interestingly all the competitors completed the event.
