30th January 2010
CELEBRATION TIME
ANTHONY DE BEAUVILLE

It is celebration time this evening Saturday 30th 2010, commencing at 7:00 pm when local swimmers, who for the past year have showcased their talent tirelessly in and out of the swimming pool, will finally don their finery and head for the Bay Gardens Hotel in Rodney Bay just a stone’s throw away from the Rodney Height Aquatic Center for their fifth Annual Awards Ceremony.
One is uncertain under whose distinguished patronage the awards will be held, but can rest assured a number of distinguished individuals will be in attendance including St.Lucia Minister for Youth and Sports Lenard Montoute. The feature address will be given by former OECS Sports Coordinator and renowned cricket commentator Joseph ‘Reds’ Perreira. Perreria over the years has been an avid swimming fan, and this evening by all accounts will be no exception.

Up to press time no one knows what Perreira’s message will contain as the 400 plus competitive swimmers on the island will again be in the thick of things as another hectic year awaits them all in 2010. In addition to awards won in championships both here and abroad in 2009 there are also a number of special categories for both clubs and individuals, Junior male and female and Senior male and female swimmer of the year respectively, and recognition for the various sponsor’s that made 2009 a tremendous success.

Meanwhile, also this evening the St.Lucia Volleyball Association will stage its 6th Annual prestigious awards ceremony at the Glenn Castle Hotel in Gros Islet commencing from 7:00 pm. By all reports coming from SLVA the evening is expected to be an exciting one as SLVA looks to recognize the scintillating performances by the St. Lucia National male and female volleyball team that participated in last year’s Norceca qualifying round of matches and the Guy Memorial Tournament.

Interestingly as the envelopes remain sealed and are still in the possession of the SLASA and SLVA executive, all and sundry will know this evening when the names for the top awards junior and senior swimmers for 2009 will be announced. The many Swimming and Volleyball enthusiasts who followed the two associations calendars of activities for 2009 will remember the names of Siona Huxley, Julien Brice, Runako Daniel, The Day Sisters, Gabriele Marshall and Danielle Beaubrun; while for Volleyball, Petal Isidore, Julian Biscette, Dania Hamilton, Jason Octave, just to name a few, made us all proud.
