Chess on the Rise in Saint Lucia

Chess is known for its considerable demand on the mental faculties and so it is seen as a vital tool in the academic development of students. The National Community Foundation (NCF) is certainly promoting the game in local schools for this reason and has undertaken several activities to do this. The NCF’s latest initiative is its hosting of a world class chess training consultant, Mr. Jerry Nash, who will be in Saint Lucia from January 25-30, 2010. The NCF is carrying out this activity in collaboration with the Saint Lucia Social Development Fund (SSDF).

 
 

Mr. Nash is a National Education Consultant with the United States Chess Federation and specializes in scholastic chess. During his one-week visit, Mr. Nash will be conducting chess training sessions for students, teachers and volunteers who run various community programmes. He will also be conducting a special session for leaders in business, government and non-governmental organizations on the importance of the game. The sessions will take place at the City Hall in Castries. Mr. Nash’s visit is part of the NCF’s drive to expand the Chess in Schools Program; increase the playing of chess throughout Saint Lucia; and educate community leaders about the benefits of playing chess.
The 2009 EC Global/NCF Chess Champion, Reginald Martyr, gave Saint Lucia its best ranking to date at the regional chess championship held in Trinidad. A 2nd form Saint Mary’s College student, Reginald placed 6th out of a field of 28 competitors, a commendable performance which he is sure to improve upon in the future.
