Three St.Lucia
Sports Journalists call for programme to be
established at Grande Riviere
Three
sports journalists visited the Grande Riviere
Secondary School on Tuesday 19th January 2010
following an invitation from the principal Mr.
Cyrus Cepal, and during an address to the school’s
assembly, a call was made for the institution
to establish a programme which would result
in the school producing quality sportsmen and
women.
The three sports journalists who visited the
school were David Pascal of the Star Newspaper,
Anthony De Beauville of the Voice Newspaper,
and Robertson S. Henry of Sportcaraibe, who
during an address to the assembled students
and teachers, called on the principal, teachers,
and students “to establish a sports programme
at the Grande Riviere Secondary School second
to none in St. Lucia.”
In recognizing the difficulties many students
face on a daily basis, Henry called for an account
to be established at the principal’s office,
into which every student and teacher would make
contributions. From this account, Henry said
that the finance will be channeled to assist
students who represent the Grande Riviere Secondary
School, and meet the requirements, are assisted
with the necessary dietary supplements.
However, he pointed out that these students
“should not, and cannot be part of the
programme if they will take whatever finance
that they have, and buy non nourishing foods.
“These students cannot be part of the
programme where they buy brand named clothes
and shoes, yet will not purchase the basic sports
equipment for themselves.”
According to Henry, “such a programme
will see teachers working with each other and
students in putting together a proper training
regime in both theory and practice. “Students
who are part of the school sports teams, will
be properly trained, assisted with dietary supplements,
and will compete with pride and dignity.

“Students,
who are not athletes, will be trained as cricket
umpires, referees, scorers, statisticians,
facility managers, sports journalists, assistant
team managers, and first aiders; so the school’s
sports teams will be well supported.
“Where the members of the school’s
other sports teams, and certain classes, will
receive transportation support to travel and
support the school team which is participating
on that day.
“Where new initiatives are put in place,
and would revolutionize school sports in St.
Lucia, and “a programme where the parents
and members of the community will come out
to support the Grande Riviere Secondary School.”
Meanwhile, Principal Cyrus Cepal was full
of praise for the three journalists who despite
their schedules, made the effort to be at
the school. He said that many attempts had
been made to get the St. Lucia media to give
coverage to the school, but it was always
an excuse of “the school being too far.”
However, Henry was not happy with this response
by his media colleagues and told the assembled
students, teachers, and other school officials,
that he and his media colleagues present with
him “are of the opinion that sports
coverage in St. Lucia, extends beyond the
boundaries of the City of Castries.”
