VSA 3rd Annual Youth Football Invitational Top Notch
Anthony De Beauville

A whooping 82 goals were scored at the Castries Comprehensive Secondary School Ground over a two day period and that was when the Valley Soccer Academy staged its most talked about 3rd Annual Youth Football Invitational with over 325 young and aspiring footballers representing three age categories in attendance as they showcased their talents at the highest level in spite of a heavy outfield due to persistent rain on the first day.
The record number of parents and supporters that were present to lend their support on the opening day was addressed by VSA President Francis Daniel, who said, “When a young player chooses soccer as a life long sport it determines to a high degree the content of the training programme, the expertise and experience of coaches, the social life in the club, the academy or school and the structure of the quality of competition.”
Daniel further went on to say, “The act of developing an effective training and competitive programme for children lies in knowing which kind of practice and competition the player is ready for at any given stage of his or her physical and mental development. Children will only learn quickly, effectively and thoroughly when the demands of the training session or competition in which they are participating match their intellectual, psychological and motor – skills.”
“It is this context that we at Valley Soccer Academy have used as a rule of thumb to develop our curriculum. Your presence is testimony of VSA’s growing influence on youth football.

Those of you that were present at VSA inaugural Invitational can attest to the level of interest and the number of participants in the tournament. The rivalry and the quality of play has increased tremendously. The tournament plays a pivotal role for those clubs, academies and schools that continue to cry out for opportunities to show off their skills.” Daniel noted.
Meanwhile, SLFA’s President Patrick Mathurin, and Sacred Cows Managing Director Delroy Alexander were both in attendance as they lamented the need for such tournaments and the positive impact VSA had on youth development on the island. The SLFA’s Boss also noted that the success of Valley Soccer Academy (VSA) to date has further strengthered his support for extending the Academy’s programs to other districts on the island during 2010.
Interestingly, the YFI as it became known sets a platform for young men and women 15 years and younger to participate in 3 age categories. These are the Under 11, Under 13 and Under 16. The tournament is structured to allow the Under 11 and Under 13 to participate with 7 and 9 players respectively, using a size 4 ball, a pair of 12 ft by 6 ft goals and half the regulation football field. Eight teams participated in each of these age divisions.
