Sussex Veteran Cricketers to take on St.Lucia Veterans in 4 ODI’s
Anthony De Beauville

Well believe it or not, the Sports Tourism sector in St. Lucia has certainly taken off in a big way and as early as next week another English group will be on the island to play a series of matches against local teams. This is all part of a series of tours Blue Skies Sports Tours has organized with some reputable leading sports tour operators in the United Kingdom.
According to Blue Skies Sports Tours Manager Simon Anthonisz he is pleased to confirm that the Sussex 50 and over cricket tour to St.Lucia will commence on Tuesday 23rd February to Thursday 4th March 2010.
The Sussex squad comprises players from a number of Clubs in Sussex, an English County to the South of London, as well as others from as far afield as Wales. They are expected to face a National St. Lucian Veteran’s team captained by Rupert Branford, as well as Gros Islet, Dennery and a combined Southern cricket team.
A packed program of activities awaits the group of thirty three which also includes supporters as they will be keen to enjoy exploring St. Lucia and the many attractions the island has to offer, the Sussex tourists will be taking a boat trip to Soufriere and the Pitons and there will also be a farewell beach party.
Veteran cricket commentator, Joseph ‘Reds’ Perreira and former consultant of the SLTB has kindly agreed to share some of his many memories with the group at the welcome reception on the evening of Tuesday 23rd February 2010 at Coco Palm Hotel in Rodney Bay.

Meanwhile, Simon Anthonisz, Managing Director of Blue Skies Sports Tours, the first sports tourism company to be established in St. Lucia, says, “I am looking forward to welcoming the Sussex group and feel confident that they will enjoy the famous St.Lucian hospitality as well as the cricket and will return to England to share their lifelong memories of their trip with friends and colleagues.”
Anthonisz further suggested that the 2010 visit by the Sussex team will give St. Lucia’s veteran cricketers an opportunity to test their mantle against similar aged opposition many of whom have recently returned from early retirement to play in the inaugural 40 and over Festival last year.
The tour itinerary includes matches against; Gros Islet Veterans at the Monchy Playing Field on Thursday 25th February. The visitors train will travel to the picturesque town of Soufriere as they come up against a Combined Southern Veterans XI on Saturday 27th February. Their next stop will be in the fishing Village of Dennery on Monday 1st March while, their final encounter will be against a St. Lucia Master’s XI at Beausejour Cricket Ground in Gros Islet on Wednesday 3rd March.
Interestingly the St. Lucia Master’s XI will be led by former national cricketer and Windward Island player all-rounder Rupert Branford and will include the likes of Wint Desir, opening batsman George Alfred, wicketkeeper/batsman Ignatius Cadet, off break bowler Marshall Francis and left arm leg spinner Hubert Annibaffa, just to name a few who will showcase some of yesteryear’s brilliance, certainly one for the younger generation to look forward to.
