Carla and
Fanashua win Sir Ira Road Race
It
was another humid day in the north of the island
on Tuesday 16th February and despite the heat
Carla Louisy and Fanashua Stanislaus went on
to emerge as new champions in the annual Sir
Ira Simmons Secondary School Road Race.
Interestingly only one minute separated the
first two places, and another one minute was
the time between second and third place finishers
in the Girl’s division. Carla Louisy of
Flamboyant House running strong throughout crossed
the finish line in a time of 43 minutes 02:59
seconds, ahead of Tara Louis of Frangipani House
who placed second in 44 minutes 19:81 secs,
and Nita Joseph who finished in 45 minutes 00:21
seconds.
The race was run over the new route which takes
the runners from the starting point in the Caribbean
Cinemas Car-park, through Union, to Grande Riviere,
Corinth, unto the Castries – Gros-Islet
Highway, Marisule, down the highway through
Choc, and to finish at the Caribbean Cinemas
Car-park.
It is a route that tests the mental and physical
stamina of the runners, and Carla took full
advantage of the lesser prepared runners, but
was pushed by Louis and Joseph towards the end.
She pulled away at the Marisule Junction, and
when the slope of the Choc Hill appeared, she
knew that as long as she kept up the momentum,
she would be home dry despite the scotching
heat.
