20th Feburary 2010
AND THE WINNER IS...!
Anthony De Beauvile

With St.Lucia hours away before it ushers in its 31st Independence Anniversary and with the dwindling economy facing the wider world, Fair Helen is no exception. To date one independent activity has been cancelled. It is uncertain whether to use the term million dollar question, but one can safely say all and sundry in the sporting world are anticipating the outcome when the final results are made known by the master of ceremonies on the evening journalist Winston Springer Jr.
Local sports enthusiasts throughout St.Lucia and the region at large will know who tops the prestigious awards list as Sportsman and Sportswoman for 2009.
From the list of nominees that was sent in by the 15 sports associations on or before the deadline date of Thursday 21st January to the Department of Youth and Sports, based on the following 15 out of the 40 nominees were short listed, Personal Achievement, Performance on the field of play, and Contribution to the Development of the Sport. The 15 were made public to the various national sports associations and media personnel.
Like last year the 2009 National Sports Awards Ceremony is under the distinguished patronage of Her Excellency the Governor General Dame Pearlette Louisy and will be held at the Gaiety in Rodney Bay, Gros Islet this evening Saturday, 20th February at 7:30 pm on the buzzer.

Also in attendance will be St.Lucia’s Prime Minister Stephenson King, Minister for Youth and Sports Leonard Montoute and an undisclosed number of specially invited guests.
Meanwhile, the nominees for Junior Sportsman of the Year are: - Lenyn Leonce - Athletics, Dalton Polius – Cricket and Joshua Runako Daniel – Swimming. Junior Sportswoman of the Year: - Sandisha Antoine – Athletics, Siona Huxley – Swimming and Julia D’ Auvergne Tennis.
Like in previous years, they were all exciting in their game. For Sportsman of the Year: - Zepherinus Joseph – Athletics, Darren Sammy – Cricket, Julien Brice – Swimming, Adrian Albert – Table Tennis and Kurt Maraj – Cycling. Like the men the ladies certainly brought joy and excitement to our hearts too, for Sportswoman of the Year: - Lavern Spencer – Athletics, Maria David – Cricket, Danielle Beaubrun – Swimming, and Dania Hamilton – Volleyball. So the lines are drawn; I have carefully made my pick, so your guess is as good as always.
