Choiseul
X1 Hammered Cokenach Cricket Club in ODI

Sports
tourism is alive in St.Lucia, as the visiting
Cokenach Cricket Club out of the United Kingdom
who arrived in St. Lucia on Tuesday, February
2nd for a ten-day tour, played one 40-over match
and four 35-over matches against local opposition,
winning two and losing three. They departed
St.Lucia on Sunday, February 14th.
In their first match on tour that ended in a
very convincing win for the Choiseul XI at the
La Fargue Playing Field. Choiseul won the toss
and batted and did as they pleased with the
English attack to register a mammoth total of
390 for the loss of eight wickets under hot
and humid weather conditions. The outstanding
performances on the day were the opening pair
of Junior Alfred 90 and Arthur Eugene 74 as
they posted a stand of 175 before Eugene retired.
The scorers were kept busy as the two openers
plundered the bowlers to all parts of the field,
Alfred’s 90 included 14 fours and 2 massive
sixes made from just 56 deliveries, while Eugene’s
innings was laced with 6 exquisite fours and
6 sixes from a mere 44 balls, Captain Stephen
Williams continued the onslaught with a whirlwind
62 from 41 deliveries, while Ricky George (35)
and Ted Peterson (27) also cashed in for Choiseul.

Bowling for Coikenach,
Liam Botten and Benny Blackaby captured 2
for 45 and 2 for 47 respectively, while Alexander
Thomp-son, David Collins and Matthew Stevens
picked up one wicket each. Interestingly if
this had been a boxing match, the referee
would have stepped in very early, but Cokenach
had to keep going until their 40-overs allocation
was completed. They never gave up trying,
even near the end; fielders were still diving
for the ball, mostly in vain, and backing
up with vigour. Their only realistic hope
was to put up a good batting display to allow
themselves to finish with dignity.
In their turn at the crease they surrendered
early. The visitors faced only 24 overs as
they were dismissed for a paltry 49 with only
Liam Botten making it into double figures
with 15. Meanwhile, unconfirmed reports indicated
that this was the largest margin of victory/defeat
recorded at the La Fargue Playing Field. By
doing little more than bowling accurately,
Audey Alexander was the home team’s
most successful bowler with figures of 5 Overs,
3 Maidens, 3 Runs, 3 Wickets. The other wicket
takers were Canice Richardson (2 for 11),
Ted Peterson (2 for 14), and Anderson Mitchell
and Stephen Williams one wicket each.
