With less than fifty hours to go before the master of Ceremonies on the evening Winston Springer Jr, says “And the winner is”! Hundreds of St. Lucians sports enthusiasts will be glued to their favourite radio station to find out who will emerge as the Senior Sportswoman for 2009. Like last year the Gala Ceremony will be held at the Gaiety on Rodney Bay on Saturday 20th February, 2010, under the distinguished patronage of Her Excellency Governor General Dame Pearlette Louisy.
The selection committee has narrowed the list to four making the race for the prestigious award a very interesting one. For the past five years the top performers have evoked many emotions from the sporting public, and this year promises to be even more competitive.
Sensational world top ranked CAC high jumper Levern Spencer from the sport of athletics, CAC gold medalist, Danielle Beaubrun from swimming, medium fast bowler Maria David from cricket, and outstanding blocker and hitter Dania Hamilton from volleyball make up the shortlisted nominees for the 2009 Sportswoman of the Year category and are all in with a chance.
Maria David caught the eyes of many cricket fans when she came onto the scene, bowling with aggression and captured the attention of the local cricket authorities. In the 2009 Courts/Laurie Auguste Women’s Twenty20 Cricket Tournament, David amassed a total of 115 runs, with a top score of 57, playing for the Choiseul Ladies’ Cricket Team.
Although her bowling did not have the expected returns, nonetheless her form with the bat merited her selection onto the St. Lucia national women cricket team. In the West Indies Cricket Board Regional Women’s Tournament in Guyana, against Barbados she slammed a top score of 42 for St.Lucia which further enhanced her reputation and the quality of player she is.
Over the years a lot has been disclosed about this female swimmer, who holds multiple national age group records, and in 2009, further solidified her reputation with seven gold and four silver medals, holding; seven national records, and qualifying for both the CASCO Games and Commonwealth Games later this year.

Olympian, Danielle Beaubrun, currently a student at the Florida Gulf Coast University and a member of the Sea Jays Swim Club, during the many competitions in 2009, won two gold and a silver medal at the highly competitive CCCAN Swimming Championships; the best ever achievement by any St. Lucian swimmer.
She was the only female high jumper from the Central America and Caribbean Region to qualify for the IAAF World Track and Field Championships in Germany in 2009. Olympian Levern Spencer is currently ranked the number one female high jumper in the Caribbean, and amongst the top twelve female high jumpers in the world.
Last year she competed in a number of championships, where she won five gold medals, one silver medal, and one bronze medal, including a memorable performance at the CAC Track and Field Championships in Cuba; successfully soaring over the bar at 1.91 metres, and setting a new St. Lucia national record in the process.
Having successfully captained the Le Club Volleyball Team to championship victory, winning the Bank of Saint Lucia sponsored Guy Brown Memorial Volleyball League at which she was awarded the Best Spiker, Dania Hamilton had other exploits on her mind.
