SLAA Independence10K Classic on Sunday
Anthony De Beauville

The St. Lucia Athletics Association will be staging its Annual Independence Day 10K Classic on Sunday 14th February, one week ahead of the island’s 31st Independence Celebrations; the event which will be 2 laps around the Beausejour circuit, is scheduled to start outside the Gros Islet Secondary School at 4:00 pm.
According to the SLAA Technical team the runners will make a left turn onto Bella Rosa Road, go around the Beausejour Cricket Stadium onto the Beausejour main road, continue on this road back to the Gros Islet Secondary School for the end of the lap which is 5 kilometres.
Interestingly a number of the island’s top male long distance runners will be at the starting line, 6th time OECS Half Marathon Champion Zepherinus ‘Knockey’ Joseph, Run Barbados Marathon Champion Victor Ledgers will be in the thick of things, close on their heels will be Jason ‘Spiderman’ Sayers, Wayne ‘Ali’ St.Ange, Winsbert Sylvester, Neville Dupre, Michael James and the experienced Anthony Neptune.

Meanwhile, the ladies category will be hard to tell as to whom will emerge as champion this time around, but one thing is certain the return of former national long distance runner and Road Busters representative Candia Esnard - Masey will be hoping to make life a lot difficult for the likes of Fernanda Sealy, Perlina Murray, and Shoshanna Vidal. Esnard-Masey in her earlier years represented St.Lucia at a number of OECS half marathon events, where she is expected to start as a favourite in tomorrow’s event.
Following the race a number of prizes will be awarded to the top finishers in the Male and Female Open, Oldest Male and Female Finisher and Youngest Male and Female competitors.
