Audi Precision
Cup Takes Aim
Stan Bishop

The
first ever Audi Precision Cup will shoot off
on February 27 and 28 at the Club GAR indoor
range facility at Bois d’Orange in the
Industrial Zone.
The two-day four-event 100 round shooting tournament,
according to tournament director Anthony Bristol
of Club GAR, the event is one of the progressive
moves being pursued by the club to raise the
level of the sport in St. Lucia.
“This is an important hallmark in the
development of the shooting sport in St. Lucia
and it’s really going to be hosted by
Club GAR in association with Audi (St. Lucia),
the only sponsor and its representatives J.Q.
Motors Ltd. For many years, we’ve had
practical shooting, which St. Lucia has done
pretty well in. We’ve now decided to pursue
our target and our precision competitive skills,”
Bristol told the press last Wednesday morning.
There are two categories for the tournament:
an open category for all licensed firearms holders
and one category for all persons employed in
law enforcement and security industries.
A $500 first prize in each category is up for
grabs. A key feature of the competition, Bristol
added, is the use of turning targets, which
will really test the mettle of shooter’s
true marksmanship.
“The targets aren’t just going to
be in front of you but they’re going to
turn and you’re going to have to acquire
them from different positions in different times
at different distances,” the Club GAR
member said.
Bristol said the newly formed Club GAR shooting
club is the largest shooting club on the island,
with its own indoor facility. |

He added that the tournament
would serve as a warm-up opportunity and perfect
avenue of exposure for local shooters who
intend to participate in the Cibile d’Or
tournament, which is held annually in Barbados.
The tournament for now, he noted, is open
to only St. Lucian residents since the tournament
is aiming at setting a national benchmark
with a view to getting national rankings in
place.
General Manager of J.Q. Motors Ltd., Jason
Clairmonte said, since its “excellent
launch” in St. Lucia last year, the
brand was sourcing possiblities that can tie
into its marketing initiative. The shooting
tournament, he said, fit the criteria. To
this end, Audi (St. Lucia) last Wednesday
presented a cheque totaling $10,000 to Club
GAR for the staging of the event.
“This brand is synonymous with luxury
and precision and performance and this spirit
is really followed through with the Precision
Cup. That is why Audi was so interested in
this prospect. Furthermore, what we felt made
a lot of sense is that the Audi Q5, in particular
in the model lineup of Audi, actually matched
with the ideals that we were seeing being
presented here,” Clairmonte said.
The routine will be four shoots for a total
of 700 points over two days and the person
who gets closest to the 700 points will be
declared winner. The four shoots will entail
an American standard Federal Air Marshal event,
which requires great speed and dexterity;
while the other events test competititors
at various distances from 15 yards to 18 yards;
the police qualification shoot that has been
modified by the club.
An estimated 60 competitors are expected to
participate in the two-day tournament, Bristol
said. The referee for the event is Charles
Belle, secretary of the Barbados Rifle and
Pistol Federation, the largest shooting club
in that country.
The tournament will officially begin on Friday,
February 26 at Club GAR indoor range where
registration and a briefing for shooters will
be held. The actual competition on each day
begins at 9 a.m.
