Another Record, Another Medal for Spencer

St. Lucia’s world class high jumper and seven times sportswoman of the year Levern Spencer left her best for last on her first indoor European tour.
Competing Wednesday 10th February 2010, at the GE Galan in Stockholm Sweden before a crowd of almost 10,000 spectators, Spencer broke her own National indoor record of 1.90 metres, when she soared over the bar at 1.92 metres to win the bronze medal in what was her final competition on this tour.

It was another outstanding performance for the Caribbean’s No.1 high jumper when she made it even sweeter by the fact that she in the process defeated Irina Gordeeva the joint No.1 high jumper in Russia who ended the 2009 outdoor season as joint world No. 3 and current United States No.1 Chaunte Howard who ended last season ranked No. 8 in the world. They placed fourth and fifth respectively.
The Event was won by world No.1 Blanka Vlasic of Croatia who cleared a height of 2.01 metres with Sweden’s No.1 Emma Green who interestingly cleared a similar mark to Spencer, placing second.
The prolific high jumper left Sweden for the United States on Friday 12th and is expected to be in St. Lucia on Monday 15th February for a one week visit, that also includes the Annual National Sports Awards slated for Saturday 20th February at the Gaiety in Rodney Bay. Meanwhile, Spencer is one of four Senior Sportswomen short listed for the prestigious title for St.Lucia Sportswoman of the Year for 2009.
