Well over 280 runners competed in this year’s event that started just outside Caribbean Cinema in Choc Estate, as the runners made their way into Union, Grande Riviere, Corinth, unto the Castries Gros Highway and to finish outside the Cinema.
Strangely enough no one really challenged St.Catherine at the start, as he went on to make his final break through before the Union Bridge, St.Catherine placed second last year and was seen as favourite to win the year’s event on the day.
Speaking to this reporter after the race St .Catherine said, “I felt good during the race and although it was hot and humid, I had no complaints with conditions. I used the race to judge my fitness ahead of this year’s Secondary School Road Race. I did a time of 32. 52:53 seconds compared to last year so at least I am running much faster this year. Hopefully I can run a good race when ever the event is being held. I can’t complain. I am targeting the first three spots for CCSS.

Hornet takes Charge of Marigot Road Race

Ashlyne Phillip of Hornet House maintained her determination, rhythm and stride as she went past the lead female runners on the way to win her first ever road race in the Annual Marigot Secondary School Road Race in a time of 1 hour 00:40 seconds ahead of four challenges all being members of Jack Spaniard House.
Phillip made life difficult on the home stretch for Uella Charles that crossed the finish line in a time of 1 hour 01:15 seconds, followed by Kacey Electhere 1 hour 06: 54 seconds, Kerzella Francis 1 hour 07: 47 seconds and Casmina Emmanuel 1 hour 10:24 seconds to round –up the top five finishers on the day in the female category.
In the boys category, Ed Joseph of Hornet House took an early lead after surging ahead of the pack to successfully defend his 2009 crown to win in a time 40 minutes 12 seconds and to secure both top spot for Hornets.
The route which was changed from last year’s due to safety concerns for the runners by the police, wound its way through the Roseau Valley banana plantations, although it appeared to be easier than last year’s according to a number of the runners; it was still challenging.
Interestingly, only two runners kept Joseph in sight, but never really challenged him for the top spot, and with his closest threat a distance of some five hundred yards behind when he turned onto the West Coast Highway heading back to the school. The race was well and truly over from that point.
Coming in at number two was Daniel Joseph of Jack Spaniard House that crossed the finish line in a time of 42 minutes, Dave Edward and Zacias Dornelly both of Scorpion House crossed the line in 42 minutes 42 seconds, and 45 minutes 15 seconds respectively. Rounding up the first five finishers was Rick Edward of Hornet House with a time of 46 minutes 22 seconds. Meanwhile, following Joseph’s victory he appears to be a student of few words, saying that he will be preparing himself to seek to bring the 2010 Secondary School Road Race title to the Marigot Secondary School whenever it is held.
When the friendly rivalry over between the various houses and the dust settle,d a number of teachers were elated at the effort by a number of students. Even those who did not compete on the day assisted in other areas as volunteers. The police outriders were quite pleased as well with the cooperation received from the motoring public, and hope that such will continue as it will only augur well for the development of the road races organized by the various schools.
