Secondary school teachers at the wicket

Secondary School teachers on the island along with officials from the District Education offices, last week attended a three-day Cricket Coaching Course under near perfect weather conditions at the Vigie Multi Purpose Sports Complex. The three day event concluded on Friday 5th February, 2010.
As part of the Ministry of Youth and Sports drive to improve the coaching skills of the teachers at the various levels, the coaching course will seek to enhance their knowledge in the following areas; teaching of the various skills at the basic level, widen the participants knowledge of cricket, demonstrate the enjoyment to be gained from participation, and enabling each of the participants to teach the basic skills of cricket at the junior level.
The participants were under the watchful eyes of Keith Charley, Emmanuel Bellas, and Alton Crafton. The module used includes batting, running between the wickets, bowling, wicket-keeping, fielding, and general knowledge.
Former National cricketer Keith Charlery who is the Cricket Coach attached to the Ministry of Social Transformation, Youth and Sports, said, “There is a need to get participants exposed to a Level One Course and based on the enthusiasm demonstrated to date;

I would be submitting a request for such a course to be administered to the top participants.”
In an effort to ensure that the schools benefit from the knowledge obtained from the course, “The Ministry of Youth and Sports would be monitoring the performance of the participants in the execution of their duties at their respective schools.” Charlery stated.
Charlery also added that the teachers would be responsible for the setting up of their own programmes at the individual schools, based on the needs of the students and aims and objectives of the schools.
Interestingly, last year a 15 man squad was selected to represent St. Lucia at the under - 15 Windward Island Cricket Tournament, the members of the team all came from a number of Secondary Schools on the island and for the first time in twelve years the home team created history when they emerged as champions under the captaincy of Larry Edward a student from the Castries Comprehensive Secondary School, coached by Keith Charlery and Alton Crafton respectively.
