Cricketers Darren Sammy, Dalton Polius, Tara Louis and Maria David walked away with the top awards as the St.Lucia National Cricket Association staged their 5th Annual Cricket Awards at the Bay Gardens Hotel in Rodney Bay on the weekend.
West Indies all - rounder Sammy captured the Senior Male Cricketer of the Year award, Dalton Polius the Junior Male Cricketer, 16 year old Tara Louis copped the Junior Female Cricketer, while fast bowler Maria David walked away with Senior Female Cricketer of the Year award.
President of the SLNCA, Julian Charles, in his brief address congratulated the winners of the various national competitions. He also showered praise on the management and players of the National under - 15 team which won the Windwards under - 15 Tournament. Charles a former national cricketer also applauded the various sponsors for their assistance during 2009 and implored them and others to continue in partnership with the SLNCA during 2010.
Joanna Reynolds – Atherton Deputy Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Social Transformation, Youth and Sports also addressed the gathering on the evening as she went on to praise the SLNAC for recognizing the efforts of their national teams, affiliates and individual players and, the Director of Sacred Cows Group – Delroy Alexander delivered the feature address and spoke on the topic Celebrating Excellence.
Currently touring Australia with the West Indies Senior Cricket Team, St. Lucia’s first Test cricketer Darren Sammy in 2009 went on to represent the Windward Islands in the WICB Regional Tournament and had an exciting season where he amassed 476 runs at an average of 43.27 runs with a highest score of 121 against Barbados. Darren also captured 23 wickets in the process. His prolific run of form continued while playing for the West Indies against Bangladesh in the Test series, where he average 56.96 with the bat and 17.33 with the ball. Sammy also played for the West Indies in the ICC Trophy Tournament in South Africa and the Twenty/20 Series versus Bangladesh and England.

 
 

Dalton Polius represented St.Lucia in the under -19 Windward Islands Tournament where he had a prolific run, he subsequently went on to captain the Windward Island in the TCL West Indies Tournament and emerged as one of the most outstanding all –rounders, Dalton was subsequently chosen to represent the West Indies under - 19 team ICC World Cup which was held last month in New Zealand.
Tara Louis is only 16 years old and a student of Sir Ira Simmons Secondary School, in 2009 Louis represented Central Castries in the Courts Laurie Auguste Women’s Twenty/20 Tournament and led teams batting with a total of 290 runs and a highest score of 90 runs. Her prolific run continued when she went on to represent St. Lucia in the under – 19 Tournament and scored a well played 40 versus Trinidad and Tobago.
A member of the Choiseul Ladies Cricket Team that participated in the Courts Laurie Auguste Women’s Twenty/20 Tournament Maria David had a good run on form amassing a total of 115 runs with a highest score of 57. Representing St.Lucia at the WICB Women’s Tournament in Guyana, Davis went on to score 42 runs versus Barbados.
Meanwhile, the following awards were presented on the night Championship Trophies:- SLNCA Inter District U19 – Gros Islet, SLNCA Promotional League – Mon Repos, Coca Cola Mindoo Phillip Premier League – Canaries, Courts Laurie Auguste Women’s Twenty/20 – South Castries, SMJ Beverages Twenty/20 Knockout – Central Castries,
Most runs and most wickets in the various competitions, Outstanding Achievements for 2009 - Dalton Polius, Garey Mathurin and Darren Sammy. National Coaches, Sponsor of the Year SMJ Beverages. Print and Electronic Media House of the Year: - Print Media – The Voice Publishing Company, Electronic Media – Daher Broadcasting Service, while the President’s Trophy went to Dalton Polius.
