VFCSS RULES
Anthony De Beauville

came and played with purpose and pride and they conquered as well. Their aim is to maintain their dominance of Secondary School Sports on the Island. The Vieux Fort Comprehensive were crowned Champions of the 2010 Super J Ltd. Schools Under -16 Basketball Tournament at the Vigie Sports Complex in the scorching heat after defeating St. Mary’s College 42 - 31 in what one can consider a hard fought and thrilling encounter between the two teams.
For St. Mary’s College it was the second loss in an under -16 Final so far this year.
Decked in their customary gold outfit the boys from the south of the island led in every quarter, 10 -7, 22 - 8, 28 -20 and finally 42 – 31. At the half time whistle the score was 22 - 8. and by the look of things one would have thought it would have been a walk away for VFCSS, but that was not to be. However, following the break the Samarians under strict instructions from their Coach came out firing on all cylinders as they went on a 9 - 0 rampage with # 5 Kyanni Elwin scoring 2 three pointers in quick succession which saw the balance going in their favour along with their supporters, who out numbered the Vieux Fort fans.
The surge by the Samarians was shortlived as VFCSS took a time out to break the momentum and though they outscored their opponents 12 - 6 the damage was already done and the quarter ended 28 – 20 with only the final quarter to play for and the Championship trophy.
The Final quarter was certainly more keenly contested as St. Mary’s College went all out on the offensive only to be challenged by the solid defence of Vieux Fort marshaled by their 6 ‘ 3’’ Center Philbert Williams. With a mass exodus by the Samarians knowing full well it was a lost cause for them, and with less than a hundredth of a second remaining on the official clock on the table, to add insult to injury the final nail was driven with force by the MVP and the diminutive Jamal Charles, of Vieux Fort Comprehensive. Standing a little over 4’ feet tall he was the man to watch as he ended the game in grand style when he drilled a Three Pointer from half court right on the buzzer. You heard right, from half court, something hitherto unseen in local basketball in St. Lucia. Certainly one for the future.

After going down to Leon Hess Comprehensive in the finals last year it was sweet and rewarding victory for the Southern Players who turned the Vigie Complex into a mini type carnival celebration in early February.
Scoring for Vieux were # 4 Olvin Presco 14 Points, 8 Rebounds and 7 Steals; # 3 Jamal Charles 8 Points, 8 Steals; and # 14 Rahim Auguste and # 2 Ekon Descartes 7 Points each; while # 11 Philbert Williams chipped in with 6 Points and 9 Rebounds and 4 Block Shots.
For St. Mary’s College # 5 Kyaan Elivin had 14 Points and 7 Steals.
Following the thriller a number of awards were presented to some outstanding players in the tournament: - Most Points - Philbert Williams -Vieux Fort Comprehensive, Most Steals - Omodele Phillip - St. Mary’s College, Most Rebounds - Kraig Brooks - Castries Comprehensive, Most Blocks - Philbert Williams Vieux Fort Comprehensive, Overall M. V. P. of the Tournament Philbert Williams – Vieux Fort Comprehensive, M.V.P. of the Final Jamal Charles - Vieux Fort Comprehensive.
While in the Zonal Winners Group A - Castries Comprehensive Secondary School, Zonal Winners Group B - St. Mary’s College, and Zonal Winners Group C - Vieux Fort Comprehensive Secondary School.
So at the end of it all one can safely say, in spite of the 2009 tournament concluded in 2010, the level of play exhibited by some of the participating schools particularly in the Quarter, Semi and Final round of matches was extremely exciting and scintillating. Interestingly, St.Lucia will be hosting the 2010 Windward Islands Secondary School Games in July. Basketball enthusiasts can rest assured that Secondary School Basketball is in safe hands.
