And the award goes to…
Anthony De Beauville

The St. Lucia Volleyball Association held its 6th annual recognition ceremony at the Glen Castle Hotel in Gros Islet. The 2009 junior and senior male and female volleyballers of the year and other outstanding volleyballers, the championship teams, and sponsors for 2009 were recognized.
In attendance were the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Social Transformation, Youth and Sports Donavan Williams, the executive members of SLVA, former renowned cricket commentator Joseph ‘Reds’ Perreira, well wishers and members of the media.
On an evening that was all glitter in his brief address to those present President of SLVA Brian Louisy said, “The hosting of this annual recognition by SLVA is one of the most important activities in our calendar as one of our principles, and principle strategies is for us to be “Lavish in our Approbation and Praise” as we recognize the talented athletes and young persons who participate in our sport. Yes, they are extremely rare and talented and as such they must be so treated and acknowledged”
Lousy went on to say, “2009 was a good one for St. Lucia: As a nation we re-established our dominance in the OECS now referred to as the Eastern Caribbean Volleyball Association (ECVA) where we dominated in both male and female divisions. St.Lucia won two World Championship Pools it hosted and moved to the second round. The home team played well, but not good enough in round two. Our players showed they can compete at that level and have the potential to play even at a higher level”
“Also SLVA in 2009 was able to get two of its Referees Terry Faisal and Wendell Jn Baptiste to successfully complete the FIVB International Referee Candidate Course in the Dominican Republic. Interestingly our two Beach Volleyball Pairs are on the verge of qualifying for the 2010 CAC Games to take place in Puerto in July. At the youth level SLVA continues to see progress of the youth team under the guidance of Roberto Garcia as they won the Volleyball Section of the Windward Islands Secondary School Games.” Louisy stated.
“The presence and input of Garcia has been excellent and our coaches who have taken the opportunity and time to work with him learned much, and the players are starting to appreciate the impact of Roberto. We, however, understand that when National Duty calls, this will mean that Roberto Garcia is not likely to be back with us. This highlights, the quality, respect and regard with which he is held in Cuba and Globally. SLVA does hope a replacement will be available sooner rather than later.” The former national volleyball player went on to say.

Louisy noted, “2010 can be an exciting year depending on how SLVA takes on the opportunities and challenges before us. SLVA has set a program of activities that seeks to respond to the changes that are taking place in the Volleyball World and to face these assertively and positively.”
Meanwhile, on the night 19 year old student Julian Biscette of Sir Arthur Lewis Community College and a member of the Jet Setters Volleyball Team which won the Bank of St.Lucia/ Guy Memorial League copped the Junior Male Volleyball player of the year. Another 19 year old student Petal Isidore of Sir Arthur Lewis Community College and a member of Le Club Volleyball Team, (Isidore was a member of the senior national team which participated in the qualifying rounds of the World Championships Tournament and performed creditably as a Middle Hitter and Blocker) walked away with the prestigious award for Junior Female Volleyball Player of the Year.
In the senior category it was anyone’s guess as to who would have walked away with the Senior male and Female awards on the evening. Dania Hamilton left no stone unturned. As a member of Le Club Volleyball Team which she successfully captained to victory in the BOSL/Guy Memorial League she won the award for the best Spiker, Hamilton further went on to Captain the St.Lucia team which participated in the World Championship NORCEA Qualifiers and won the MVP player award, and together with her partner Samantha Mann won every beach tournament for the CASCO games in Puerto Rico Beach Volleyball.
Standing well over 6‘ tall Jason Octave won the Senior Male Volleyballer of the Year, Octave led St. Lucia’s Volleyball team to top honours in the NORCEA and went on to do a clean sweep at the awards. He won Best Spiker, Best Scorer, Best Receiver, and title of Overall MVP of the championship.
